Degree and area of specialization:

B.S. required in Entomology, Zoology, Bacteriology/Microbiology, or a related biological sciences field with an emphasis on both laboratory and field ecology skills. A M.S. degree in one of these fields helpful but not required.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

At least 2 years of relevant work experience, including mosquito identification and PCR is required. Demonstrated proficiency in data entry and analysis in industry standard software is required. Must be able to perform field experiments and arthropod sampling as well as laboratory assessments of infection status. Must be capable of independent performance, able to train and manage the work of student interns and assistants and able to work collaboratively with a large group of researchers both at UW and at multiple institutions.

License or Certificate:

Must be willing and able to obtain pesticide application certification in the State of Wisconsin

Position Summary:

The Research Specialist will be responsible for intensified surveillance and programs for ticks and mosquitoes and associated disease agents, including implementation of all aspects of the monitoring program, quality control, database management, and report generation. The Researcher will also provide assistance to other researchers working on tick and mosquito control projects, development of novel tools for diagnosis and development of teaching and outreach materials as needed.

The UW Madison Department of Entomology is a vibrant, internationally recognized community with programs that encompass basic and applied research on insects in diverse systems. The position offers the exciting opportunity to work within this community and to be involved in a leadership role in the establishment of the newly funded Midwestern Center of Excellence in Vector Borne Disease. The appointee will be encouraged to present the results of his/her work at local, regional and National meetings and to develop leadership skills in project development and management.

Additional Information:

- Must be able to drive State of Wisconsin vehicles
- Must be able to work outdoors and manage field experiments
- Frequent overnight travel outside of Madison will be required during the summer
