Degree and area of specialization:

A degree is not required for this position but a bachelor's or technical degree in Industrial Maintenance or a related field is helpul. Other education or experience related to the duties of the position will also be considered.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of relevant work experience related to repair and maintenance, preferably showing a pattern of progressive responsibility. At least 3 years of experience in these areas is required.

Position Summary:

This position provides instrument maker supervisor support to the research and instructional programs of the Russell Labs Administrative Service Center. The incumbent works directly with professors, graduate students and research personnel to design and build laboratory scientific research instruments and repair and/or modify existing research equipment. Repairs and maintains refrigerators, freezers, incubators, small engines, laboratory instruments, and other tools and equipment. Fabricates furniture, shelving, and laboratory apparatus. This position participates in the hiring process and supervises employees who provide technical support to all departments. The incumbent serves as building manager for Russell Laboratories and safety officer/hazardous materials manager for Plant Pathology, Entomology, and Forest and Wildlife Ecology. The person in this position serves on departmental committees such as space and equipment, greenhouse, and safety. The incumbent maintains communications with Physical Plant regarding major and minor building remodeling projects and repairs. Since this position directly affects research and instruction, the incumbent must be capable of using sound judgment in selecting from alternative courses of action. The incumbent performs miscellaneous duties as required. The work is performed under general supervision.
