Degree and area of specialization:

BS or BA in Genetics, Agronomy, Biology, or related field.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

At least two semesters of undergraduate laboratory research experience preferred.

Applicant should be a highly organized individual, capable of working independently and as a part of a team.

Experience with the following research methods is desirable: DNA and RNA isolation, DNA sequencing, and PCR.

Familiarity with data management and analysis software such as Excel and Access would be helpful.

Position Summary:

The Research Specialist will be in charge of organizing plant growth experiments and collecting trait data on the plants as well as doing genetics analyses with the plants. Much of the work involves plant care in the field, greenhouse, or growth chambers. The genetic analyses involve extraction of DNA and RNA from plant tissues and determining the genotypes of plants using the polymerase chain reaction and gel electrophoreses. This work will be done under the supervision of Professor John Doebley and members of his team. The overall project focuses on the genetics of the evolution of plant form using maize as the model system.
