Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor's Degree / Master's Degree Preferred in Engineering, Science, Business, Education Administration or related field.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Prefer at least 2 years of experience in an engineering, research or academic setting (a minimum of 7 years required for appointment at the senior level). Previous experience in pre and post award grant activities with knowledge of federal, state and UW regulations preferred. Must have strong analytical and writing skills and possess the ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms with faculty, researchers and staff at all levels. Experience editing, writing, and reviewing technical and scientific papers and research contracts desirable. This position requires a significant degree of organization, and interaction with faculty, staff, students, campus administrative departments, Deans, grantee organizations, and both federal and non-federal research sponsors.

Position Summary:

The Research Administrator (RA) will join the ME administrative team in providing high quality support to members of ME engaged in sponsored research. Utilizing excellent customer support and interpersonal skills, you will work with world class researchers, investigators, and other university representatives to maintain and build upon the vibrant and expanding Mechanical Engineering research portfolio. We are seeking a candidate with sound decision making and balanced judgment, with the flexibility of thought and style needed to maximize benefit to University stakeholders. This professional position will have the opportunity to support sponsored research that will have significant community and societal impact.

Under general supervision, the RA is responsible for the oversight and fiscal management of pre-award and post-award research grant and contract duties. This position will also assist the ME Accountant to monitor Graduate School funds, as well as department research gift accounts and reporting, and work with departmental fiscal officers to generate consolidated financial reports to reflect all research funding sources. This position also requires expertise in developing and submitting multiple-PI grants with administrative cores, i.e., NIH program projects and NSF center grants and applications for and oversight of use of human subjects (requiring IRB approval.)

The RA will provide strategic leadership, direction, and expertise in budget preparation and review; proposal review and tracking, and new award set up in accordance with contract guidelines; assist Principal Investigators (PIs) with effort management; interpret and ensure spending in compliance with sponsor and University regulations and policies; reporting and related clerical support associated with the processing of grants and contracts; analyze and reconcile project fiscal reports to identify and resolve discrepancies; review and approve allowable expenses as stipulated by sponsor guidelines; oversee close- out of projects; provide guidance and training to faculty and research personnel in the requirements of grant management, and long range forecasting to aid PIs with strategic planning of research programs.
