Degree and area of specialization:

PhD required in Entomology, Zoology, Bacteriology/Microbiology, or a related biological sciences field with an emphasis on both laboratory and field ecology skills.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

At least 2 years of relevant work experience, including arthropod identification and molecular biology (PCR in particular) is preferred. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communication is required. Evidence of published first author publications preferred. Must be able to coordinate and perform field experiments and arthropod sampling as well as manage and perform laboratory assessments of infection status. Must be capable of independent performance, able to train and manage the work of student interns and assistants, and able to work collaboratively with a large group of researchers at multiple institutions. Title prefix will be determined at time of hire based on level of experience and qualifications.

License or Certificate:

Must be able to obtain pesticide application certification in the State of Wisconsin.

Position Summary:

The scientist will be a Public Health Entomologist who will be responsible for surveillance of vector-borne pathogens in Wisconsin, including development and validation of rapid diagnostic tools for detection of pathogens in arthropod pools. The individual selected will be responsible for outreach activities and connections to public health to assist in moving/translating information from research and public health to meaningful and informative messages for the general public in the form of regular website updates and outreach publications. This position will also engage in workshop development and delivery.

The UW Madison Department of Entomology is a vibrant, internationally recognized community with programs that encompass basic and applied research on insects in diverse systems. The position offers the exciting opportunity to work within this community and to be involved in a leadership role in the establishment of the newly funded Midwestern Center of Excellence in Vector Borne Disease. The appointee will be encouraged to develop a strong research portfolio and to publish and present the results of his/her work at Regional, National and International meetings.

Additional Information:

- Must be able to drive State of Wisconsin vehicles.
- Must be able to work outdoors and manage field experiments.
- Frequent overnight travel outside of Madison will be required during the summer.
