Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

A minimum of 3 years of supervisory or lead experience in a laboratory animal, veterinary or zoo setting is preferred. Prior experience with nonhuman primates in a laboratory animal setting is highly desirable. American Association for Laboratory Animal Sciences (AALAS) certification is highly desireable.

Incumbent must possess:
-the ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of Animal Research Technicians;
-knowledge of the behavior, husbandry and health requirements of research animals; previous experience in a similar position involving nonhuman primates is desired;
-sufficient computer skills to learn the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, colony records and e-mail systems at the WNPRC;
-ability to follow and enforce rules and instructions regarding the use of personal protective equipment and safety procedures;
-ability to effectively lead and utilize supervisory techniques and methods;
-excellent oral and written communication skills, and ability to disseminate information across all levels of the organization in a prompt and professional manner; and
-ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals, including research faculty, staff, students, and campus administrative departments.

Position Summary:

The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) is one of seven federally supported National Primate Research Centers and the only one in the Midwest. WNPRC's mission is to increase the understanding of basic primate biology and to improve human health and quality of life through research. To accomplish this, the WNPRC helps discover treatments, preventions and cures for human disease; generates new knowledge of primate biology, from the molecular and whole animal levels to the understanding of primate ecosystems; facilitates research progress by providing expertise, resources and training to scientists worldwide; and collects primate information and disseminates to the research community and to the public. Based in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education (OVCRGE) of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison), the WNPRC has strong, long-established research and teaching links to the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), the College of Letters and Science (L&S), the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM).

Under the general supervision of the WNPRC Colony Manager, the Research Program Manager I serves as a first line supervisor of laboratory animal husbandry for the WNPRC central and satellite facilities. The incumbent is expected to ensure that daily husbandry care is provided to the colony and facilities are maintained as per the WNPRC's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), the Animal Welfare Act and its amendments, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards, the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison OVCRGE Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The incumbent will provide direction and proper assignment of facility-specific husbandry workloads, provide training for new and existing staff, evaluate staff performance, ensure compliance and manage all aspects of staff under his/her direction. This position is being hired to supervise at all WNPRC locations as needed, including WNPRC's central location on campus or either of two satellite facilities in Blue Mounds or at the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research (WIMR), near UW Hospital.

Additional Information:

The responsibilities of this position require the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds on a frequent basis, as well as walking/standing on feet for long periods of time. Other physical activities include bending, stooping, pushing, pulling and stretching.

Must be tuberculosis (TB) negative.

Applicant will be required to have a measles titer within the first week of employment. Depending on the results, applicant may need to be immunized.

Allergies to animals must be controlled by medication.

Must possess a valid driver's license that meets standards of UW Risk Management in order to operate WNPRC vehicles.

Schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm. Evenings, weekend and holiday work required as necessary.
