Degree and area of specialization:
Master's degree with a major in chemistry, biology, natural sciences, or related discipline. An official or copy of an official, transcript will be required prior to an offer of employment. (Applicants with degrees from foreign institutions must have the transcripts evaluated by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services http://www.naces.org/ and the applicant is responsible for all costs associated with that evaluation).

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum seven years of experience in a leadership capacity in a professional or academic setting. Experience must include direct supervision of staff including staff hiring/management, managing daily operations and production of staff, and assuring high quality results are reported and in a safe working environment. Knowledge of, and preferably direct experience with the primary analytical tools used in an Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory (Ion Chromatography, Flow Injection Analysis Colorimetry, Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry, and Ion Selective Electrodes). A strong technical background with the ability to troubleshoot and perform complex research analytical support.

Position Summary:
This position is responsible for managing the laboratory functions of the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) in the Environmental Health Division (EHD) at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH). Coordination and communication at a State, Regional, and National level is necessary to ensure smooth operations of the samples and lab functions serving the National Program. Staff management responsibilities include: managing the daily work activities for the NADP lab functions, directing employees, recruiting, facilitating staff training, evaluating employee performance, and taking disciplinary action when necessary. Other duties include: monitoring work flow and lab operations, approving/monitoring laboratory expenditures, drafting budgets, consulting with internal and external colleagues regarding scientific and matters, reviewing and evaluating test reports.

The employee in this position is expected to use the tools and principles of quality management in performing their daily work including the following: Demonstrate exceptional customer service by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with other colleagues, supervisors, and all customers and partners. Provide constructive feedback for the purpose of continuous improvement in a manner that is supportive of the State Laboratory of Hygiene and its mission. Use effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit. Present ideas, carry out assignments, and provide information as required. Participate in continuous learning through professional development activities.

This position is a supervisory position and reports to the Director of the Environmental Health Division.

Knowledge of analytical instrumentation for the measurement of inorganic constituents such as Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), flow injection analyzers, Ion Chromatography (IC).

Knowledge of overall laboratory operations, safety protocols, data validation, and staff cross training and back-up procedures.
Knowledge and experience in SOPs as they pertain to environmental analyses and commensurate data analysis.
Experience with Microsoft Office products.
Knowledge of quality assurance as it applies to environmental analysis.
