Job Summary:

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education (OVCRGE) serves as the chief research officer and the principal advisor to the Chancellor and the Provost on research and graduate education. The OVCRGE provides oversight for the institution's broad research enterprise including a university-wide array of faculty and staff research programs with total annual expenditures of more than $1 billion, and promotes graduate education and research by enhancing funding support from internal and external agencies including the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF). The OVCRGE is responsible for an array of multidisciplinary research centers and institutes, research policy and compliance which includes conflict of interest, human subjects, animal welfare and responsible conduct of research and negotiation of industry contracts.

The OVCRGE is responsible for the University of Wisconsin-Madison Graduate School. The Graduate School provides an instructional and research environment for approximately 9,000 graduate students in over 150 fields at the master's and doctoral levels, overseeing almost 200 programs, certificates, and minors stretching across virtually every school and college in the university. The Graduate School receives nearly 20,000 applications from all fifty states and 140 different countries of the world, and confers more than 750 Ph.D's and 1,800 master's degrees each year. The Graduate School works in concert with other campus units, faculty, and staff to provide guidance and resources that support over 800 postdoctoral researchers and scholars in their professional development. The Graduate School recognizes and values the diversity represented in the graduate student population in the broadest possible sense.

Under general direction of the OVCRGE Assistant Vice Chancellor for Human Resources, this position is responsible for all personnel actions for Student Hourly (SH) and Temporary Employees (TE), and all matters relating to payroll and benefits functions within the OVCRGE.

The OVCRGE has university staff, academic staff, employees-in-training (E-I-T), graduate assistants, student hourly appointments, and non-FTE related appointments. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the OVCRGE there are many campus faculty members that have affiliations with the OVCRGE research centers. The incumbent is expected to demonstrate exceptional customer service by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with OVCRGE Associate Vice Chancellors, Graduate School Associate Deans, Center Administrators, colleagues and other customers. This is an extremely sensitive position, and as such all responsibilities and duties must be carried out with tact and discretion. The incumbent is expected to function with a high degree of independence and will routinely apply a broad-based knowledge of State of Wisconsin, UW-Madison and OVCRGE policies and procedures. The incumbent is expected to use exceptional organizational and communication skills, and good judgment.
