Job Summary:

The Histology Technician will be in a research laboratory in the Department of Neuroscience in the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Much of the work will be done in the U.W. School of Medicine and Public Health Electron Microscope Facility. The technician will be responsible for all aspects of preparing and processing fixed neural tissue at the light and electron microscopic level. Steps involved include sectioning, stepping the sections through a series of complex reactions to make specific labeled cells visible and electron dense, immunohistochemistry, plastic embedding, counterstaining, ultrathin re-sectioning, and mounting/counterstaining processed tissues on grids and slides for light or electron microscope visualization. As the technician becomes more experienced, they will be trained in quantitative evaluation of the data collected. Work is performed under the close, direct supervision of the director of the research laboratory (Phil Smith, Professor, Dept. of Neuroscience) as well as the project manager of the U.W. School of Medicine and Public Health Electron Microscopy Facility (Randall Massey).
