2-3 years minimum inspecting new/existing buildlings.

License or Certificate:

Fire Inspector Certification and/or Building Inspector Certification preferred.

Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Environmental Health Manager of UW Madison Environment Health and Safety, this position plays a key role in efforts to develop and promote a comprehensive Fire & Life Safety program for the University of Wisconsin -Madison. This position provides senior level staff assistance and performs technical inspection work for all University of Wisconsin - Madison property within the borders of the state of Wisconsin. This position requires an understanding of federal, state and local regulations as they pertain to Fire and Life Safety issues (i.e. OSHA, IFC, NFPA, Wisconsin Administrative Code and Wisconsin State Statutes) Excellent verbal and written skills are essential.

Additional Information:

1. Knowledge of established safety standards, fire and life safety codes, state statutes; theories, practices, procedures, methods and techniques.
2. Knowledge of building design, layout and systems, especially those systems used for fire suppression.
3. Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, IFC and Wisconsin Administrative Codes relating to buildings, equipment and working environment safety.
4. Knowledge of administrative principles and procedures as related to program development and operations, including statistical methods, reports and data collection.
5. Knowledge of methods used in teaching and training and oral presentations.
6. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products (i.e. Outlook, Excel, Word, Power Point).
7. Knowledge of Fire and Life Safety software.
8. Skill in keyboard and personal computer skills.
9. Skill in CAD drafting/design experience (e.g. AutoCAD 2012).
10. Skill in oral, written, and interpersonal communication.
11. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of University faculty, staff, civil service and Madison Fire Department personnel to obtain cooperation and acceptance of safety programs and requirements.
12. Ability to obtain pertinent and factual information and to prepare clear, concise and complete verbal and written reports.
13. Ability to read and understand blueprints, drawings, and building specifications.
14. Ability to bend, stop, twist, crawl and other motions.
15. Ability to lift objects up to 40 lbs.
16. Ability to maintain a valid Wisconsin driver's license and a motor vehicle record that meets UW Risk Management Standards to drive State of Wisconsin owned vehicles (non-essential function).
17. Ability to work under adverse weather conditions such as severe cold, extreme heat, rain, snow, and ice.
