FIELD OPERATIONS SPECIALIST


Position Summary:
The Wisconsin Seed Potato Certification Program is charged with providing tissue culture generated, variety pure, disease-free foundation potato stocks to the Wisconsin certified seed potato industry. Work is performed at the Lelah Starks elite foundation seed potato farm (the State Farm) located in Rhinelander, WI. The production at the farm consists of 50 varieties sold from field generation one and two from approximately 100 acres of potato production annually.

This position leads the agronomic team by assisting in production planning, implementation of best practices in field operations, and lead process improvement efforts. This person works in cooperation with Agriculture Supervisor to coordinate staffing, supplies, and equipment for successful outcomes of production. This position requires some night and weekend work, and limited travel.

Degree and Area of Specialization:
A Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy, Farm Business Management, or an agricultural field is preferred but is not required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:
Required skills & qualifications: 5 years of experience with agricultural equipment operation which may include tractors pulling implements, self-propelled sprayers, or specialized planting and harvesting equipment. Proficiency in software used for office communications and spreadsheets. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to train and work with operational personnel, and present in public forums. Research, mathematical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to acquire and hold a valid US driver's license. Motivated self-starter. Physical requirements: Ability to successfully operate farm equipment, which may require climbing. Ability to frequently lift and/or lift and move up to 50 lbs. Ability to walk fields in all weather conditions.

Preferred skills: 2-3 years of potato production work experience is preferred. Proficiency in modern tractor operation with guidance systems. Experience leading teams. Experience with commercial pesticide application. Exposure to working with geospatial information. Mechanical and equipment maintenance skills.

Title prefix will be determined based on candidate qualifications at the time of offer.

License or Certificate:
Must hold a valid US driver's license and be elgible for driver coverage under UW Risk management policy.

Evening and weekend work will be required, specifically during the growing season. This is a 12 month full time academic staff appointment.
