Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in health or human services (e.g. nursing, social work) or related field. Master's degree preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

- At least 3 years experience in the area of developmental disabilities/special health care needs is required. A minimum of 7 years' work experience required for appointment at the senior level.
- Experience providing information, resources and referrals to families, or conducting family-centered research or clinical services.

Well-qualified applicants will have the following preferred experiences:

- Experience working within a Maternal and Child Health training program or graduate work in areas of maternal and child health.
- Experiences in an academic setting preferred. Clinical, human services or family experience working with children and youth with special health care needs highly preferred.
- Experience working in an academic setting preferred.

Position Summary:

The Waisman Center is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases throughout the lifespan. One of only 15 centers of its kind in the United States, the Waisman Center encompasses laboratories for biomedical and behavioral research, a brain imaging center, and a clinical bio- manufacturing facility for the production of pharmaceuticals for early stage human clinical trials. In addition to its research efforts, the Center provides an array of services to people with developmental disabilities, offers numerous educational and outreach programs to young children and their families, and trains scientists and clinicians who will serve our nation in the future.

The Family Specialist is a staff member of the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, (UCEDD) Developmental Disabilities Services Unit at the Waisman Center. As part of the Developmental Disabilities Services unit, the Family Specialist will provide Family Navigation services and training of students primarily within the Developmental Disabilities clinical program, which includes the Autism and Developmental Disabilities and Down syndrome clinics. The Family Specialist will support the training, service and research programs of the UCEDD, including the Wisconsin Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) program. This position will also contribute to the overall purpose of the state and national MCH Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN) programs to strengthen Wisconsin's infrastructure to serve children and youth with special health care needs, including children with developmental disabilities, (DD) such as autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
