Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's degree in architecture or engineering from an accredited institution of higher education

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in architectural design/construction and project management.

For Facilities Architect applicants, registration as a Professional Architect is required. Registration in the State of Wisconsin within six months of initial appointment is required.

Demonstrated experience in managing building projects from inception through construction and closeout.

Demonstrated experience in site planning & coordination, good understanding of utilities and MEP coordination, air/water/thermal barriers, experience coordinating design to work within a campus setting, experience in many different functional type, experience in the selection of interior building materials and finishes, space planning, and development of interior details.

Demonstrated experience in developing project and construction cost estimates.

License or Certificate:
Certification as a LEED accredited professional and as a Project Management Professional (PMP) is desirable.


Position Summary:
The Division of Facilities Planning & Management, Capital Planning & Development Facility Architect/Engineer is responsible for the administration, planning, and management of architectural/engineering projects that are critical to developing and maintaining campus facilities. In addition, this position is responsible for developing scope/budget documents for the biennial capital building process and serve as a campus representative during all phases of design and construction for major maintenance and construction projects, which include instructional, research, auxiliary, and academic spaces. This position will manage multiple projects simultaneously with project budgets ranging from approximately $10K to $100M. The person in this role will represent campus needs and interests with other State agencies in the design of university facilities, in setting related guidelines and in making operational decisions.

This position works closely and manages work in collaboration with other departments including other units within Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M), UW System Administration, the Division of Facilities Development, campus divisions and departments, and architectural/engineering consultants. The person in this role will have a high degree of independence.

Additional Information:
Knowledge of engineering and construction practices, building codes, standards, cost estimating, scheduling.

Knowledge and ability in the principles and practice of project management.

Knowledge and experience in interior architectural design.

Understanding and knowledge of current practices in the design of campus spaces that foster community building and social interaction.

Knowledge and experience with construction observation and the development of punch lists.

Skill in facilities programming, planning, design, and LEED associated principles.

Understanding of the increasing complexity of academic facilities in institutions of higher education.

Ability to organize, evaluate and present information effectively (graphics, construction documents, written reports, presentations, etc.).

Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Functional knowledge of standard procedures pertaining to purchasing, construction practices, administrative processes/policies, and the ability to quickly understand how these same procedures work at the University and the State.

Ability to interact, negotiate and problem solve effectively with faculty, staff, students, contractors, design professionals, campus community, government officials, and the public.

Ability to organize planning and design processes and studies.

Proficiency in Word, Excel, and AutoCAD.

Proficiency in Building Information Modeling (BIM) is desirable.

Demonstrates respect through personal behavior, developing positive working relationships with staff, students, customers and colleagues.

An individual at this level performs those duties and responsibilities expected of a fully competent professional. Typically, such duties and responsibilities require knowledge and skills gained only through experience. A fully competent professional works independently in applying the approaches, methods and techniques of his or her profession and is active in developing or assisting in the development of new approaches to resolving problems.
