Degree and area of specialization:

A bachelor's degree in Architecture, Interior Design or related field from an accredited institution of higher education is preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

A minimum of three (3) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in architectural design, construction, and construction management (7 years required for appointment at the senior level). Experience in a university setting is desirable.

License or Certificate:

Registration as a Professional Architect or the ability to become registered in the State of Wisconsin within six months is required.

Certification as a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) is desirable.

Position Summary:

This position is a technical management position for the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus responsible for the administration, planning, and management of architectural/engineering projects that are critical to developing and maintaining campus facilities. This position will aid in developing scope/budget documents for the biennial capital building process and will serve as campus representative during all phases of design and construction for major maintenance and construction projects which include instructional, research and academic spaces. On average, this position will manage 30 to 40 projects per year with project budgets ranging from $10K to $250M. The position will represent campus needs and interests with other state agencies in the design of university facilities, in setting related guidelines and in making operational decisions.

This position works closely and manages work with other departments in Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M), UW Systems Administration, the Division of State Facilities, campus divisions and departments, and architectural/engineering consultants. This position reports to the Senior Facilities Architect within Capital Planning & Development.

Additional Information:

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Proficiency in Word, Excel, Revit Architecture, SketchUp, and AutoCAD is required.

Proficiency in Powerpoint, lnDesign, Photoshop and Prezi is desirable.

Knowledge of design and construction processes and practices, building codes, standards, cost estimating, scheduling.

Skills in facilities programming, planning, design, construction, and project management.

Knowledge of conceptual/technical interior design and space layout.

Understanding of the complexity of academic/research facilities in institutions of higher education. Knowledge of the design/construction of research laboratories (including bio-containment facilities), classrooms, dormitories, and other facilities related to the University environment.

Knowledge of procedures pertaining to purchasing and construction practices, as well as administrative processes and policies of the university and state.

Ability to organize, evaluate and present information effectively (graphics, construction documents, written reports, presentations, etc.).

Ability to interact, negotiate and problem solve productively and move diverse groups to consensus ( e.g. faculty, staff, students, contractors, design professionals, campus community, government officials, and the public.)

Ability to organize and lead planning and design processes and studies.

Ability to lead project teams and willingness to work in a team environment.
