Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, or a closely related field is required. Advanced degree in a related field preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum 8 years of progressively responsible experience in physical facilities planning, design, and construction in a large, complex organization required.

Demonstrated progressive experience in the management of programs in at least three of the following strategic areas: facilities planning and design, master plan development, real estate management, space management, project management of large-scale facility improvements, or construction management of new or renovated facilities.

Demonstrated knowledge of planning, budgeting, and management of large, complex operations.

Extensive experience in leadership, supervision, and management, including the ability to coach, mentor, engage, and direct the work of individuals and teams.

Exceptional oral and written communications skills.

Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships, including the ability to negotiate and solve complex problems involving multiple constituencies.

Prior experience at a large, complex research university or comparable institution preferred.

License or Certificate:
This position will serve as UW-Madison's University Architect or supervise this position. In order for this position to be the University Architect, registration as a Professional Architect in the State of Wisconsin within six months of initial appointment is required. It is not necessary to be a registered Professional Architect in order to supervise the University Architect position.

Position Summary:
The Executive Director for Facility Planning and Delivery is responsible for leading the planning, design and construction of new buildings, as well as additions and modifications to existing buildings and landscapes, in support of the mission of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Working under the general supervision of the Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) for the Division of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M), the Executive Director provides direction, technical expertise, and assistance to building programs for 12 schools and colleges and 129 academic departments, and is responsible for establishing and evaluating appropriate campus standards for facility planning, design, construction, and related services consistent with the Campus Master Plan. This position supervises and coordinates the long-range planning, project programming, cost estimating, staff, and technical assistance required to develop and implement the $100+ million biennial capital budget. Currently UW-Madison has major capital projects in excess of $280 million in design and $250 million worth of projects in construction.

The Executive Director works closely with university leaders and others to lead an integrated approaching to planning and development that ensures excellence and contextual consistency within specific functional areas and across the institution. This position promotes proactive coordination and collaboration between FP&M departments responsible for planning, real estate management, capital project delivery, and renovations, including Capital Planning & Development, Campus Planning & Landscape Architecture, Campus Renovation Services, Space Management Office, and the Physical Plant Maintenance & Utility project groups.
