Degree and area of specialization:

BS/BA degree is required. Strong preference given to degree in Computer Science. Consideration will be given to degree in another field plus relevant computer/database programming experience.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

- Three to five years of database development and web programming experience preferably in an academic health setting. Prefix assignment determined by years of relevant experience. A minimum of 7 years post-graduate, professional work experience is required for appointment at the senior level.
- Minimum one-year professional Ruby on Rails development experience.
- Experience working in a Macintosh or Unix/Linux environment with appropriate tools is required.

Position Summary:

This position, under the direct supervision of the Information Technology Services (ITS) Director, serves as a lead technology resource for The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (DFMCH). This position will research, coordinate and build custom software/technology systems and solutions designed to aid faculty, researchers and staff in the collection, analysis and reporting of data to support administrative operations, research efforts as well as support educational and collaborative projects. Additionally, this position will be responsible for interpreting project goals and concepts, with the specific purpose of designing technology solutions to make systems more efficient and effective, to gather more appropriate data, and increase the overall quality of research, educational and administrative projects. As such, this position will play a key role in the success of the DFMCH's core missions.

Due to the scope of DFMCH initiatives, a broad range of technology skills will be necessary. This position will work closely with faculty and staff to design and build specific applications designed to gather a wide variety of data for operational, research and educational projects as well as internal analysis projects. The qualified candidate will work with a variety of systems including in-house systems (DFMCH People Information Management System), UW Health systems (Health Information Management Center, PeopleSoft), UW systems (HRS), and commercial off the shelf (COTS) systems.

Additional Information:

Specific skills required include:
- Web programming experience building interactive, secure, database driven websites and applications.
- Programming skills in Ruby on Rails 4 or 5 required.
- Development experience with relational databases such as MySQL or Oracle.
- Knowledge of HTML5.

Additional skills that would be useful include:
- Collaborative experience with Github.
- Knowledge of emerging web technologies.
- Experience programming with UJS.
- Knowledge of security best practices.
- Experience with CSS.
- Understanding of LEAN development (iterative) methodologies is a plus.

Attributes of an ideal candidate:
- Active Github profile.
- Contributions to open source projects.

Good communication skills, both verbal and written are important, as is the ability to work with faculty, researchers and non- technical staff. Experience developing a vision for an application and then coordinating the development process through progressive stages is also important. Experience working in an academic environment and understanding of the unique obstacles, processes, and workflows associated with health-related research, healthcare operations/education and its integration with technology preferred.
