Position Summary:
The Associate Administrator - Finance will provide overall budgetary, financial and administrative support for the Department of Medicine's clinical, education, research and community outreach missions under the direction of the Administrator and Chair of the Department of Medicine. The programmatic functions within the Department are absolutely dependent on appropriate budgetary management of multiple funding sources. Less than 4% of the Department's $256 million operational budget is derived from state funds. The balance is derived from patient care revenue, endowments and gifts, grants, affiliated hospitals and contracts. Therefore, careful planning and management of ongoing and new initiatives is critically important.

All UW School of Medicine and Public Health faculty and staff are responsible for upholding the highest standards for professional conduct and ethical behavior in pursuing the School's missions of patient care, education, research, and service. Professionalism includes: 1) demonstrating honesty, integrity, inclusivity, accountability, and fairness; 2) treating everyone, including patients and visitors, colleagues, staff, and learners, with kindness, compassion, and respect; and 3) making a commitment to altruism in all interactions. Faculty and staff are responsible for personally modeling professional conduct and inspiring and expecting professional behavior by others. The Department of Medicine expects all faculty and staff to abide by these principles of professionalism, and associated laws and university policies, in the performance of their responsibilities.

The department currently consists of over 1,200 faculty and staff consisting of approximately 395 paid faculty, 160 house staff, 360 academic and university staff and over 280 volunteer faculty.

The department has 11 subspecialty Divisions: Allergy, Pulmonary & Critical Care; Cardiovascular Medicine; Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism; Gastroenterology & Hepatology; General Internal Medicine; Geriatrics & Gerontology; Hematology, Medical Oncology & Palliative Care; Hospital Medicine; Infectious Disease; Nephrology and Rheumatology.

The position entails a high level of complexity in day-to-day operations and requires a high level of initiative, creativity and personal responsibility. The complexity is evident by the fact that the Department is organized into 12 divisions and over 100 cost centers representing clinical operations, educational units, service units, research activities and administrative units. It is also evident as the individual must work with and coordinate budgets between several entities such as the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, the UW Medical Foundation and affiliated hospitals. Additionally, the Associate Administrator - Finance works regularly with the UW Health Staff to manage the Department's physician compensation plan.

The department also provides administrative/financial support to 4 separate operating units within the School of Medicine & Public Health at present: Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (CTRI), Wisconsin Alzheimer's Institute (WAI), Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center (SCRMC) and Center for Women's Health and Research (CWHR).

The Associate Administrator - Finance reports directly to the Administrator and works as a member of the administrative leadership team.

The School of Medicine and Public Health has a deep and profound commitment to diversity both as an end in itself but, also as a valuable means for eliminating health disparities. As such, we strongly encourage applications from candidates who foster and promote the values of diversity and inclusion.

Additional Information:
Position also requires strong leadership, management, physician relations, financial analysis and oral/written communication, team building, systems expertise, creativity, flexibility, collaboration, organization assessment, decision- making and interpersonal and staff development skills as well as the ability to operate in high- pressure situations. Candidates must also demonstrate a high degree of initiative, financial analysis operational efficiencies and cost containment, human resource management and strategic planning.

This is considered a Position of Trust and will be subject to criminal background check requirements under UW policy.
