Position Summary:
The Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison), in collaboration with the Grainger Institute for Engineering within the College of Engineering, seek candidates for up to two tenure-track faculty positions in the interdisciplinary area of sensors and sensing. Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Discovery, design, synthesis, and characterization of sensing and responding materials, including nanomaterials, especially soft nanomaterials, thin films, and materials for service in extreme environments.
- Development including theory, design, and fabrication of sensor devices, networks, and systems for physical and biological sensing and/or control applications, with an emphasis on the mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical aspects of sensors and actuators.
- Sensor and sensing technologies for applications in healthcare, autonomous vehicles, energy harvesting and conversion, power systems, and environmental and infrastructure monitoring.

Candidates will be appointed as tenure-track faculty in one of the academic departments listed above and will be appointed as Fellows within the Grainger Institute for Engineering (http://graingerinstitute.engr.wisc.edu). Candidates with expertise that spans a set of these targeted area and transcends the traditional boundaries of a single department are especially encouraged to apply.

The Grainger Institute for Engineering serves as a research incubator within the College of Engineering. The Institute fosters a transdisciplinary research and educational environment and provides the infrastructure to address grand technological challenges. Current areas of focus are advanced manufacturing, energy and sustainability, biomanufacturing, neuroengineering, big data and machine learning, sensors and sensing, and smart and connected healthcare. New research directions will continue to be launched and nurtured within the Institute.
