Degree and area of specialization:
Accounting or finance degree or equivalent experience in accounting or related role preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Knowledge and application of generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS).
- Knowledge of computer applications, automated data analysis, and data entry techniques.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Demonstrated computer expertise with a variety of software programs.
- Experience interpreting and analyzing financial data.
- Excellent problem solving skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to exercise initiative and motivation, independent decision making skills, and good judgment.

Position Summary:
The Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education is a research and development laboratory that provides a range of services including consulting, design, fabrication, and calibration services in scientific instrumentation.

The Accountant reports to the Assistant Director of the PSL and independently performs professional level accounting duties including management of the internal accounting system called Masterpiece (MAS). This system consists of integrated general ledger, job cost, purchase order, accounts payable, investory and labor distribution modules which track all internal accounting functions and projects. This position requires a thorough knowledge of UW, State and Federal regulations to assure the MAS reports adhere to Generally Accepted Accounting Principals (GAAP). This position determines cost allocations and methodologies and develops new or modifies existing policies and procedures to verify adequate financial controls for the MAS. This position also performs reconciliation between the MAS and Wisconsin Data Mart (WISDM) systems assuring the MAS is balanced properly to the WISDM system. This position also directs the billing and accounts receivable functions assuring all customers receive timely invoices and financial statements. This position leads and directs the accounting services department including the accounts payable function, delegated from the UW Accounting office, and auditing functions such that both conform to General Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS) and UW regulations and the State of Wisconsin prompt payment law.
