Degree and area of specialization:

Completion of a Bachelor's degree in accounting or closely related field such as business or finance is strongly preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

At least 1-2 years of relevant experience is preferred, as well as demonstrated knowledge and experience with the principles and practices of governmental accounting, including Uniform Guidance for federal grants and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). 7 years relevant experience required for appointment at the Senior level.

Experience in working with complex automated accounting systems and processes preferred.

Experience providing technical assistance to diverse audiences with a range of accounting backgrounds preferred. Demonstrated computer expertise with a variety of University of Wisconsin Financial reporting programs preferred.

Advanced working knowledge of the full Microsoft Office Suite preferred.

Position Summary:

Created in 2006, the Wisconsin Energy Institute (WEI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is a world-class leader in clean energy research, education and outreach. With more than 100 affiliated faculty from numerous disciplines, we are connecting, collaborating and coordinating efforts to solve the world's energy problems. The WEI has an operating budget of $4M annually and employs 20 full-time operations positions. In addition to the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center, the WEI administrative unit manages DOE, and other federal projects, non-federal projects, revenue-generating funds, indirect cost returns and foundation funds in excess of $35M annually.

Within the WEI, the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) is a $250 million dollar, multi-institutional research program that conducts fundamental, genomics-based research to design the microbial and plant systems needed to realize the potential of biofuels. The vision of the GLBRC is to become a worldwide center of excellence for research and development of celluosic ethanol and other bioenergy products. The GLBRC resides at the UW-Madison with Michigan State University as a major partner.

Under general supervision, this position performs professional level accounting duties. This position will be responsible for the maintenance, reconciliation and auditing of financial records and journals within the WEI internal accounting system as well as the UW-Madison Accounting Systems. The position carries out and assists in the determination of cost allocations and methodologies and the development of new or modification of existing policies and procedures to verify adequate financial controls for the WEI. This position carries out all necessary reconciliations between the WEI and the WISDM (Wisconsin Data Mart) systems assuring the WEI is balanced properly to the WISDM system.

This position will coordinate grant and contract financial and award activity, and establish required administrative and accounting controls for awarded programs, and act as the point person for internal and external audit activities. To be successful, this position will acquire a thorough knowledge of university, school and internal agency, state, federal and donor rules and regulations in the maintenance, reconciliation and analysis of accounts. This work also requires a significant degree of interaction with faculty, research staff, other universities and private industry regarding budget issues. The ability to coordinate these unique areas and to represent the WEI in a professional manner is essential. This position will also serve as the lead worker for the business services area of the WEI.
