The College of Social Sciences at Eastern Washington University invites applications for a Lecturer in the Anthropology program within the Department of Geography and Anthropology; position may be appointed to begin September 2018, with possible delay until January 2019. This is a full-time non-tenure track position. Contract is renewable annually dependent on performance, need, and funding.

The Department of Geography and Anthropology offers undergraduate programs in anthropology and geography as well as a graduate program that includes tracks in public anthropology, cultural resource management, and critical GIS. Our department seeks a candidate whose research and teaching interests are at the intersection of biological anthropology and archaeology, particularly in bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology. The ability to lead lab-based demonstrations and courses in biological anthropology, osteoarchaeology, and/or forensics is essential, and experience working in the Pacific Northwest is highly desirable.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Lecturers at EWU are expected to devote 100% of their effort to teaching activities;


• Teaching activities include the following related responsibilities:
  
  
  
  • Typical workload for this position will involve 45 quarter hour credits per academic year, subject to Department needs, and primarily at EWU's main campus in Cheney, WA
  
  
  • Teach courses in program including introductory level and upper level undergraduate physical anthropology and archaeology and related labs and/or other courses that fulfill the needs of the Department and Program; teaching may also include graduate offerings
  
  
  • Faculty may be expected to teach face-to-face classes, hybrid or blended classes and/or online classes according to the needs of the department
  
  
  
  

Although not expected, there may be opportunities for summer quarter instruction.

Other Responsibilities:

A workload plan will be developed and included as part of the faculty contract. Teaching normally will comprise 100% of the workload, 45 credits in a 3-quarter year. Teaching includes the following additional responsibilities as defined in the faculty CBA:

• Meet all scheduled classes


• Plan, organize and inform students of course content, texts, readings, assignments, attendance expectations and methods of evaluation including grading scales


• Schedule and attend office hours


• Turn in grades according to established deadlines


• Additionally, all faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning.

Required Qualifications:

• Master's degree or higher in anthropology, archaeology, or related field


• Background in bioarchaeology, bioanthropology, forensic anthropology, or related field


• Minimum one year teaching experience in higher education as instructor of record or lab assistant


• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal with strong attention to detail


• Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff, and the public.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Doctoral degree in anthropology, archaeology, or related field.


• Experience teaching and leading lab and/or field-based course work in physical anthropology and archaeology or forensic anthropology


• Experience with bioarchaeology, bioanthropology, forensics, and/or archaeology in the Pacific Northwest or Great Basin
