Postdoctoral Fellow in the Digital Liberal Arts

Postdoctoral Fellow in the Digital Liberal Arts
Middlebury College

Postdoctoral Fellow in the Digital Liberal Arts,: Center for Teaching, Learning, and Research, Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT

Middlebury College invites applications for a one-year position as Postdoctoral Fellow in the Digital Liberal Arts, with potential for renewal for a second year, starting in August 2019. Situated within the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Research and reporting to the Dean for Faculty Development and Research, the Fellow will play a central role in sustaining and growing Middlebury's efforts in digital scholarship and pedagogy. We are seeking a creative and technically skilled person to promote the use of digital technologies and resources for humanities research, teaching, and intellectual engagement. This will take the form of four connected activities: building awareness, building capacity, project support, and connecting with the larger community of Digital Humanities scholarship. The strongest candidates will be familiar with a variety of digital methods, extensive experience with collaborative digital scholarship, and awareness of issues at the intersection of digital scholarship and pedagogy.

The Fellow will work with Middlebury's Digital Liberal Arts executive committee, collaborating with a team of faculty, academic technologists and library staff, and working across campus to promote, encourage, and guide faculty who are undertaking new efforts in digital research and pedagogy. The Fellow's primary responsibilities will include consulting with faculty about digital projects, organizing and participating in digital training workshops, managing intra-college communications about the DLA, and following and reporting on trends in the Digital Humanities. In recognition of the importance of innovative scholarship for this position, 20 percent of the Fellow's time will be allocated to their own research, writing, giving presentations, and related scholarly activities, with access to generous professional development resources.

The position also provides critical support for a group of faculty who are actively developing digital methods courses and capstone projects within American Studies, Film & Media Culture, History, and Sociology; thus familiarity with one or more of those disciplines is preferred. The successful candidate will have experience in digital scholarship across disciplines, and be poised to bring their particular digital expertise to campus to help develop knowledge and interest among faculty, staff, and students. The DLA has been in place for five years, serving as the hub for innovative digital research at Middlebury; the Fellow will work to support ongoing efforts, including regular events, workshops, reading groups, campus communications, and student mentorship.
