Director, Bread Loaf Writers' Conferences

Director, Bread Loaf Writers' Conferences
Middlebury Language Schools

The Bread Loaf Writers' Conference is the oldest and most distinguished writers' conference in America. Since 1926 it has convened in mid-August at the Bread Loaf campus of Middlebury College. The Conference brings together approximately three hundred aspiring writers, established authors, and representatives of the publishing world. In addition to Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, there are three additional programs that the Director oversees: Bread Loaf in Sicily Conference, an intensive seven-day writers' conference held in Erice, an ancient, hilltop town on the western coast of Sicily; Bread Loaf Orion Environmental Writers' Conference, run in collaboration with Orion magazine and the Middlebury College Environmental Studies Program, which hones the skills of those interested in producing literary writing about the environment and the natural world; and Bread Loaf Translators' Conference, designed to provide training and community to beginning as well as experienced translators in the pursuit of translating literary texts into English and runs concurrently with Bread Loaf Orion. The Director reports to Middlebury's Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Schools.

This is a part time position. Time commitments include approximately five weeks in residence across the four programs; two to three hours per day workload; two visits per year to Middlebury for admissions work, program and budget planning, and consulting with college administration; and frequent communication with full-time Bread Loaf staff.
