Position Summary:
Provides creative, technical and managerial support in costume technology for the Middlebury College Theater Program. With the associate costume director, executes or supervises the execution of costumes for four to six departmental productions per year. Manages the costume collection. Pulls and organizes costumes for the PTP summer theater program and the Language Schools. Supervises the Associate Costume Director.

Essential Functions:

Executes or supervises the execution and or designing, pulling, organizing of productions listed below
1- Theatre academic year program
2- Potomac Theatre Project
3- 6-8 summer Language School productions

  • Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from the Costume Designer
  • In conjunction with the Costume Designer, reviews the feasibility of the designs for the faculty productions to determine what will be built, purchased, borrowed, rented or taken from stock
  • Assists the costume designer in research, shopping or in other ways as appropriate for the needs of the production. Assists designer in demonstrations, lectures and other projects on campus or in the community.
  • With the Associate Costume Director, measures all students cast in faculty productions. Keeps a computer file of these measurements. Uses each actors specific measurements to accurately create or modify costume patterns.
  • During post-production, assembles a binder of each production that includes actor measurements, costume research, sketches, costume chart and production program.
  • Assists the designer in shopping for fabrics, garments and accessories in retail and on-line venues, prioritizing both suitability and price.
  • Periodically tracks the costume departments workstudy and production expenditures; keeps the designer apprised of our status.
  • Responsible for dyeing all fabrics.
  • Determines what must be done to translate the Designers sketches for the show into three-dimensional costume form. In consultation with the designer, createsand maintainsrunning checklist of all costumes and accessories needed per productions.
  • Executes or supervises the execution of most aspects of costume production for faculty shows, in conjunction with the associate costume director. Responsible for the timely patterning, construction, fitting, alteration of the costumes pulled or constructed for faculty productions. Responsible for the completion of costumes by first dress rehearsal. Shares supervision of the workroom with the Associate Costume Director.
  • Researches historic periods as related to production setting. Also researches purchasing, renting and borrowing resources.
  • In conjunction with the associate costume director, teaches costume construction skills to students enrolled in design and production classes or fulfilling Theatres lab requirement; evaluates students in these classes.
  • With the Costume Designer, responsible for supervising Assistant Costume Shop Supervisor.
  • Interviews and hires student workers; responsible for approving and submitting their time.
  • Schedules all costume fittings. Responsible for the timely presentation of all costume pieces needed in the fitting room by the time scheduled. Assists designer as needed. Responsible for note taking. Responsible for printing a digital photo of the fitting.
  • Assures the safety of students working in the costume shops and storage spaces, when they are working under direct supervision.
  • Attends production meetings and run-throughs of each faculty production.
  • Prepares for and supervises dress rehearsals and performance of faculty productions including the training and supervision of student dressers.
  • Responsible for packing and scheduling the transport of costumes for faculty productions at WTH.
  • Responsible for the organization and timing of wardrobe changes. In consultation with the designer, finalizes working piece list prior to first dress. Revises/updates this piece list as needed.
  • Executes or supervises the execution of the designers rehearsal notes. Responsible for the proper maintenance of all costumes and accessories during the production run.
  • Manages the loans and returns of our costume collection to campus and local theater groups. Maintains accurate records of all loans. Provides clear loan policy guidelines to these groups. Collects fees.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and cataloguing of our enormous costume collection. Maintains costume storage facilities. Pulls and transports costume pieces from Wright Theater and the CFA basement, as needed.
  • Purchases all costume construction equipment and supplies in a timely manner. Submits requests for costume shop equipment after consultation with the costume team and the appropriate product research
  • Manages or assists with special projects as they arise, such as ACTF.
  • Advises students working on independent projects (departmental and non-departmental).
  • Provides costume support for guest artists/group performances.
  • Executes or supervises the execution of the sorting, sizing, and accurate organization of this collection.
  • Accepts and acknowledges donations to our collection.
  • In the summer, designs and costumes approximately 6-8 shows averaging 125 actors over the six weeks.


General Responsibilities:
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifcation
Education:

BA or BFA required, MFA in Costume Technology preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Operating and basic repair knowledge of sewing machines and other applicable machinery and devices required. Knowledge of period and contemporary clothing and accessories Knowledge of fabric characteristics, dyeing, distressing, fitting, costume rigging, patterning and draping required. Computer skills required.Valid drivers license required-this position necessitates some use of personal vehicle. Supervisory and managerial experience desired. Requires evening and weekend work as needed to support productions. Ability to work very flexible schedules. Should be able to climb ladders. Must be able to lift 20 pounds.

Experience:
Experience in patterning, draping, cutting, tailoring, altering, and fitting garments; organizing wardrobe crews; dying and distressing fabric; and costuming productions required. Teaching experience helpful.

Physical Demands:
Carrying of costumes, stock, cleaning materials from one theatre (Seeler) to another (Wright) multiple times a year.
