The Counseling and Psychiatry Services (CAPS) Director is responsible for the administration, planning and provision of comprehensive clinical mental health services for the University of Vermont student community. The Director reports to the Executive Director and Senior Public Health Officer of the Center for Health and Wellbeing (CHWB) and serves as a member of the CHWB Leadership Team. 

 

It is essential that the CAPS Director have a deep understanding and commitment to diversity and inclusion.  Countless factors contribute to the health of UVM students including family, ethnicity, income, race, gender, social status, education, nationality, sexual orientation, the environment and more.  The CAPS Director will need to be alert to the various ways in which the actions of individuals, groups, and systems create barriers to student, staff, and faculty mental health and wellbeing.  The CAPS Director will exercise determined and diligent leadership by virtue of their own experience, vision and voice to see the many ways that true and intentional inclusivity effects the delivery of exceptional mental health services to students, the hiring and development of excellent culturally attuned staff, and addressing the mental health needs of the campus.  This is a priority of the institution, the division, and the department. 

 

This position will provide strong leadership for an organization of approximately 30 full-time and part-time staff and graduate trainees.  The CAPS Director will provide supervision to the CAPS leadership team and overall support for counselors and psychiatrists involved in clinical services, outreach, prevention, and case management for students with critical needs. They will also provide direct clinical care to students with a wide variety of mental health needs; to include crisis intervention, counseling, outreach, and consultation. They will participate in short-term and long-range planning through assessment strategies and evidence-based programs serving 10,000 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate and medical students.  As a member of the CHWB leadership team, they will contribute to CHWB-wide strategic planning and key university initiatives/events, in addition to supporting campus-wide response during campus emergencies. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in counseling, clinical psychology, social work or other related disciplines. Significant and visible record of being an inspirational leader and an effective administrator. Clear evidence of a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.  Ability to enthusiastically support UVM’s commitment to enhance a diverse campus culture and inclusive student experience. Evidence of transparent leadership and management experience inclusive of professional staff training, supervision, and organizational development.  Demonstrated collaboration, problem solving, and crisis management experience.  Ability to build positive and effective relationships with students, colleagues, senior leaders, and other internal and external partners across diverse populations.  Demonstrated multicultural competence as well as comfort and skill in working with diverse populations.  Effective written, verbal, and technological communication skills.  Internship or equivalent experience that included supervision for counseling and psychotherapy activities, preferably with college-aged students.  Knowledge of issues regarding rapid change and new developments in mental health law, regulation, ethics, managed care, and quality assurance.  Appropriate state licensure, registration, or certification within a 2-year period of appointment.  Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a staff member in a clinical/counseling setting with at least three (3) in clinical and administrative supervisor capacity.  Experience in the graduate training of counselors and psychotherapists. 

 

Desired Qualifications

A strong track record of experience in progressively responsible leadership positions within college student health or health-related field.  Knowledge of best practices related to integrated health systems and services designed to promote equity, diversity, and student success.  Familiarity with assessment activities and data-driven decision-making to enact positive culture change.  Demonstrated ability to handle complex systems and organizations.  Experience with electronic health record systems. Experience with accreditation process, managed care, and insurance systems.
