Assistant Director for Community Engagement

Bennington College's foundation on the principles of progressive education places experiential learning at the core of its values. Bennington College invites applications for an Assistant Director for Community Engagement to join a dynamic and growing area of Student Life committed to the value of experiential education.

The Office of Student Engagement serves to support and invigorate the campus community through leadership and skills development, advising and by facilitating and strengthening connections to the larger Bennington community.   The Assistant Director for Community Engagement serves as the primary point of contact for the Office in all inquiries pertaining to volunteerism, civic engagement and community oriented programming. This position manages the Bennington ACTS program (Achieving Community Through Service) and serves as liaison to various community partners. Additionally the position plays a vital role in the coordination and advisement of clubs and organizations with local, regional and national community and civic engagement ties.

As a core member of the Office for Student Engagement, an ambitious and forward-thinking staff member has the opportunity to work closely with the Director and Assistant Director of Student Engagement in further developing our expanding office.

Above all else, candidates must be committed to creating diverse and inclusive communities  and must possess a genuine and steadfast interest in helping students make meaningful connections in the communities surrounding Bennington College. Additional key qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree in higher education administration or related field preferred.
  • 2-3 years of related experience required; preference for candidates with experience in higher education or a related field
  • Demonstrated passion for civic and community engagement work strongly preferred.
  • Candidates must have experience working with a diverse student population and demonstrated inclusive practices with regards to connecting diverse constituencies..
  • Must have a high attention to detail and demonstrated ability to successfully coordinate and facilitate projects independently and/or with limited supervision. Must be able to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Must possess strong computer proficiency (Word, Google, Excel, email). Facility in Adobe Photoshop strongly preferred.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.

Nestled at the foot of the Green Mountains in Vermont, the campus consists of approximately 370 acres. The College was named one of ten with the best architecture by Architectural Digest.  From campus, it is a short drive to the cultural offerings of the northern Berkshires in Massachusetts, Albany, New York, and many of Vermont’s top recreational centers. New York City, Boston, and Burlington, Vermont are all within three and a half hours by car.
