Instructor Position (Full-Time, Non-Tenure Track)



The Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture at Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure, nine-month term faculty position at the rank of Instructor, commencing on August 16, 2018. This is an exciting time to be at VCU and a great opportunity to join our forward-thinking School. VCU is one of the nation's premier urban, public research universities. With more than 31,000 students, it is one of the largest universities in Virginia. The Robertson School is accredited by ACEJMC and has approximately 1,100 students. Teaching assignments will be primarily at the undergraduate level. In all courses taught, the faculty member should reflect the School's commitment to teaching excellence, community engagement and cultural diversity.



Candidates for the position below must have: (1) a master's degree in journalism or a related field; (2) a proven track record of inspiring, guiding and mentoring others to reach their full potential; and (3) high expectations for students. Successful college teaching experience is highly preferred. We will recruit candidates with demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.



Qualifications in Journalism Production


Course content will include (but is not limited to) beginning through advanced audio and video production for journalism.



  • Strong journalism audio and video (shooting and editing) skills and experience (with the Adobe CC, esp., Audition, Premiere Pro and Photoshop), and the ability to teach those skills;

  • Ability to teach and apply traditional journalistic qualities (e.g., accuracy and fairness) for audio and video;

  • Strong writing skills in broadcast journalism formats (for both radio and TV news);

  • Familiar with TV news workflows and formats;

  • Experience in producing and delivering audio and video for online and mobile audiences; and

  • Experience with newsroom software.
