The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Education seeks applicants for a co-director of The Literacy Institute, with an anticipated hire date of July 1, 2018. The Literacy Institute advances the quality and accessibility of literacy instruction and support services across the lifespan through professional learning, research and development, evaluation and public policy.

 

Position Description

The co-director of The Literacy Institute will manage all centers, programs, and projects related to adult literacy, adult education and workforce education, oversee the strategic planning process for the Institute and provide organization leadership. This will include leadership, supervision and managerial oversight of staff; budget management; and program management. They will oversee all research and evaluation activities for the adult education, adult literacy and workforce education projects; oversee the implementation of The Literacy Institute’s strategic plan and ensure appropriate coordination of policies and procedures; develop and maintain relationships with partnering agencies, institutions and researchers, local officials, boards, funders, clients, and other stakeholders with an interest in early childhood education and early literacy development. In addition, they will provide organizational leadership in collaboration with the other co-director.

 

Qualifications

The qualified candidate will hold a master’s degree in adult literacy, adult education or other related field required. A doctorate degree is preferred.

In addition, the position requires the following qualifications:

  • Extensive experience managing grant-funded projects and programs, including demonstrated success in writing funding proposals and developing budgets for federal, state, local and private funding applications;
  • Extensive experience providing financial management for multiple projects with annual budgets of over $1 million;
  • Working knowledge of the rules, regulations and laws governing federal, state, local and private grants and contracts;
  • Extensive experience managing staff of all levels from managerial to entry-level;
  • Extensive experience managing adult literacy/adult education and professional development programs;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strategic partnerships;
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement programs and projects with proven results;
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee the strategic planning process and successfully implement a plan once developed.
