Professional Research Associate, Criminal Justice Reform



The School of Law in conjunction with the Institute for Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy seeks a Professional Research Associate (PRA) to coordinate research efforts on mental health and criminal justice reform in Virginia. The PRA will be actively involved in all aspects of research, implementation, and writing bearing on reforms to the intersection of mental health and criminal justice in Virginia. The incumbent will have the opportunity to develop expertise in designing and studying the implementation of policy and practice innovations involving persons with serious mental illness in the criminal justice system. The incumbent will assist the PI in coordinating research and collaborating with stakeholders outside UVa to further policy and practice reform. The incumbent also will conduct literature reviews, research interviews, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and study management.


The incumbent must have a Ph.D with training in mental health and/or criminal justice and have completed coursework in statistics and data analysis. A Ph.D in a behavioral science discipline is preferred. Experience in designing and coordinating a research project is required, as is experience working in mental health and/or criminal justice settings. Preference will be given to applicants with experience working with state agencies, local governments and/or private health care facilities. In addition, experience with manuscript preparation; local, state, or national presentation of research; and data analysis with SPSS, or other statistical programming software is required. Preference will be given for experience supervising research assistants.


This is a restricted position for one year and is funded by a research grant with an end date of June 30, 2019.


Subsequent annual reappointment is contingent upon performance and availability of continued grant funding.
