A priority area is additive manufacturing, although candidates in other areas of advanced manufacturing will also be considered.  The research areas of interest include all aspects of advanced manufacturing: materials processing (metals, ceramics, and composites), design for manufacturing, process modeling and analysis, high precision metrology and process control, hybrid manufacturing processes, and multiscale modeling.  The appointment is at the assistant or associate professor level and is targeted to begin in the 2015-2016 academic year.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, which includes a nuclear engineering program, has over 50 faculty, research expenditures in excess of $17M, and a current enrollment of over 170 doctoral, 130 masters, and over 1200 undergraduate students.  The department is ranked 16th and 17th out of all mechanical engineering departments in the nation in undergraduate and graduate education, respectively, by the 2014 U.S. News and World Report.  The College of Engineering’s undergraduate program is ranked 15th (8th among public universities), and the graduate program ranked 21st (12th among public universities).

The position requires a Ph.D. degree, with at least one degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field.  We are seeking candidates with exceptional potential for leadership in research and education, and strong commitment to high quality research.  The successful applicant will also be expected to provide skilled teaching of foundational and advanced courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Applications must be submitted online at https://www.jobs.vt.edu for posting number TR0140156.  The application should include a cover letter, current vita, research statement, teaching statement, up to three relevant research publications, and names of four professional references.  Review of applications will begin on February 1, 2015 and will continue until the position is filled.
