Position Summary:Work closely with the other TBMH Co-Director to develop, manage and implement new university wide graduate PhD program in TBMH. Take leadership role in developing curriculum, courses and implementation plan for TBMH program. Be primary contact for TBMH faculty to recruit, coordinate and implement curriculum leaders, teachers and research program mentors; coordinate meetings among participating faculty to develop courses, mentorship plans, and committees to implement multiple aspects of program design including student recruiting, application and admissions, evaluations, assignments of teaching responsibilities, establishment of program policies, and interface with Graduate School for implementation of program. Supervise TBMH program administrative staff (i.e. Graduate Program Coordinator).
Develop, coordinate and lead programs and activities whose primary focus is research-based education and training for undergraduate students, graduate students (M.S. M.D., Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D.), postdoctoral and clinical research trainees (residents, fellows) in the biomedical, behavioral and health sciences who carry out their primary research with faculty of the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute (VTCRI), reporting to the VTCRI executive Director.
Required Qualifications:The person who holds this position will have a Ph.D. and postdoctoral training with a strong publication record in an area of the biomedical sciences represented in the TBMH program with skills, deep understanding and working knowledge of an area of research at the molecular, cellular and systems levels. She/he should also have experience at the national and international level for recognizing and evaluating leading biomedical research. A background in biomedical scientific evaluation and editing for a high impact scientific journal and/or for a major foundation or federal agency is desirable. In addition, the successful candidate should have major interest in, temporal proximity to and knowledge of graduate biomedical research training as well as strong writing/editorial skills as may be used in the development of training programs and grants. Specific expertise is desirable in a field such as neuroscience that embodies trans-disciplinary research, education and training and that spans behavioral, biological, chemical, computational, and engineering sciences in reduced cellular and molecular systems, in whole animal models and in humans at the basic, translational and clinical levels. Ability to work with a broad range of constituents across multiple disciplines and departments/colleges at the university is important as the TBMH program encompasses a wide range of areas of research, spanning many colleges.
