The Division of Endocrinology at the University of Utah is seeking a full-time physician who will work directly with the Bariatric Surgery Program and Utah Diabetes and Endocrinology Center in their collaborative Comprehensive Weight Management Center. This position includes the expectation of an academic appointment within the Department of Medicine, with an adjunct appointment in the Department of Surgery. Candidates must be board-certified/board-eligible in Internal Medicine and/or Endocrinology. Candidates with advanced subspecialty training and certification in Bariatric/Obesity Medicine and/or Clinical Nutrition will be given preference for this position. University of Utah is a national leader in delivery of high quality preventive and interventional care for obesity and related metabolic disorders. The current epidemic of obesity demands increased coordination between multiple clinical services to ensure optimal care. To address this, University of Utah has established the Comprehensive Weight Management Program. The Center provides integrated Medical and Surgical Bariatric Care and rapid referral access to services necessary for thorough care of patients with obesity, including: Endocrinology/Diabetes Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, Sleep Medicine, Behavioral Health, Orthopedics, and Physical/Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation Medicine. By combining these services into an integrated, robust care pathway, the Comprehensive Weight Management Center seeks to improve continuity of care, enhance outcomes, and improve patient experiences. In addition, the Center seeks to develop a strong presence in the community as a place for general wellness, by offering financially affordable programs to self-referring patients seeking supervised weight loss, diabetes prevention, and overall health improvement. The Center includes a MBSAQIP Accredited Bariatric Surgery Center with three active Bariatric Surgeons, two Physician Assistants (PA), ten MD Endocrinologist/Diabetologists, four Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), four registered dieticians (RDs), three certified diabetes educators (CDEs), and a Masters-level Exercise Physiologist (EP). In addition, the program manages patients collaboratively with the PEAK Health and Fitness Clinic of the College of Health at the University of Utah.

Primary responsibilities are to provide patient care in a the setting of a collaborative practice of the Bariatric Surgery Service and the Utah Diabetes and Endocrinology Center, with a key responsibility being coordination of seamless transitions of care between each service. The applicant will provide pre-operative medical screenings, long-term follow-up for bariatric surgery patients and medical weight-management of non-surgical patients. Specifically, the applicant will: serve as the initial point of contact for patients prior to bariatric surgery; assume long-term (>1 year) post-operative follow-up care according to established MBSAQIP standards, including patients referred from external providers for post-bariatric surgery care; identify patients who may need referral to bariatric surgery for postoperative complications; and identify and treat vitamin and mineral deficiencies. The applicant will provide medical treatment for obesity and obesity-related medical problems such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, prediabetes, and diabetes; conduct screening and utilize care managers to arrange referrals for: obstructive sleep apnea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, and other pulmonary problems; cardiovascular disease, including stress-testing and cardiac rehab-based exercise where appropriate; behavioral health; orthopedic problems; and physical deconditioning and frailty. The applicant will also participate in the education of medical students, Residents, and Fellows, and will serve limited administrative duties, including collaborating with service line leaders for the oversight of quality, safety, patient satisfaction, and value of care, compliance with accreditation guidelines for bariatric surgery programming, and participation in multidisciplinary committees and program expansion initiatives. ADDITONAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
• Ensure patients receive appropriate medical care according to their condition, symptoms and diagnosis.
• Develop plan of care in conjunction with other physicians and interdisciplinary staff to ensure quality of care.
• Complete effective and timely communications with coordinating physicians and interdisciplinary staff during the patient's stages of care.
• Communicate with patients and families to explain diagnosis, diagnostic or therapeutic treatments, procedures, prognosis and/or recovery periods, and potential or expected outcomes.
• Communicate to primary and/or referring physicians and care managers. Proactively communicates with other clinicians in order to effectively coordinate care and timely transfer of information necessary to improve the quality of patient care.
• Documents patient H&P, treatment, orders, and clinical progress in the chart. Dictates, completes records, and submits charges within 24 hours of clinical visit. Returns pages, phone calls, and EMR tasks timely.
• Maintains knowledge of, and complies with, all relevant laws, regulations and policies, procedures and standards.
• Actively participate in creating and implementing improvements to achieve clinical, satisfaction and/or efficiency outcomes.
