Assistant or Associate Librarian - Education and Research Department
The faculty and staff of the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah invite applications for an Assistant Librarian in the Education and Research Department. The Assistant Librarian reports directly to the Associate Director for Education and Research. Primary domains for the Assistant Librarian's outreach and education efforts are research reproducibility, open science, research impact measurement, biomedical scholarly communication, data visualization, data management planning, literature searching and manipulation, and information skill development. This position works closely and actively partners with other team members in the Education and Research Team. Other duties may be assigned. This position is a full-time, tenure track faculty position. All librarians are expected to contribute to the profession through service, scholarship, outreach, and mentoring.
The mission of the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library is to advance and transform education, research, and health care through dynamic technologies, evidence application, and collaborative partnerships. The Library contributes to the success of health professionals, students, researchers and the community. The Library is recognized locally and nationally as a leader of intellectual exploration and as a catalyst for innovative discovery. University of Utah Health is known for cutting-edge research, particularly in genetics and biomedical informatics, and its Center for Clinical & Translational Science was refunded by the NIH in 2013. Health services research, personalized health care, and population health are new key research areas, complementing strong research in biochemistry, immunology, cardiology, diabetes and metabolism, and infectious diseases.
The Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library (http://library.med.utah.edu) serves University of Utah Health, the Intermountain West's only academic health sciences center, including the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry and the Colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy and Health as well as the University Hospitals and Clinics. The Library also serves as headquarters for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, MidContinental Region and the National Library of Medicine Training Office. It is a member of the Utah Academic Library Consortium, the Medical Library Association, the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries, and the Association of Research Libraries.
QUALIFICATIONS :
Required:
• Graduate degree from an ALA -accredited library school or other relevant accredited graduate degree
• Demonstrated knowledge of the research lifecycle and open science
• Knowledge of biomedical information resources, data management tools, and traditional and alternative research impact measurement tools
• Flexibility and adaptability for work in a fast-paced, changing environment
• Demonstrated professional initiative
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies
• Awareness of scholarly communication issues within the health sciences
• Ability to work as a team member and independently
• Commitment to diversity in the workplace and community
• Willingness to seek membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals ( AHIP )
Preferred:
• Previous professional work experience within health sciences libraries
• Bachelor's or advanced degree in basic sciences or health-related field
• Informatics, data science, or clinical research experience
• Demonstrated knowledge of concepts in research integrity, research reproducibility, and open science
• Experience providing instruction in an academic setting
• Data visualization skills
• Outreach and coalition or team-building experience
• Knowledge of research tools and software, including OSF , LabArchives, GitHub, REDCap, R, Matlab, ggplot, LaTeX, OpenRefine, Tableau, Sci2, etc.
• Experience using Python or other programming languages
Salary and Benefits:
Based on experience, starting at $53,000 minimum annually. Position is a full-time, tenure track faculty position. Rank is dependent on the qualifications of the candidate. Faculty benefits include 200 hours of vacation, and 12 days of sick leave annually. There is a generous TIAA / CREF retirement employer contribution. Job Duties
• In concert with other library team members, develop research reproducibility and open science education strategy for the institution, and contribute to planning for curricular and library-sponsored educational opportunities
• Develop and teach workshops according to the needs of the institution and the Assistant Librarian's expertise. Suggested topics include: Electronic lab notebooks like LabArchives, OSF , research impact, data management, data visualization, research reproducibility, information retrieval skills, and specialized software (e.g., LaTeX, R, ggplot)
• Contribute to data management planning and big data initiatives throughout the health sciences/main campus communities
• Develop and teach curricular-based information classes in the health sciences in collaboration with other members of the Education Team
• Support students, staff, and faculty with high level literature search requests and act as a back-up for incoming reference requests during assigned hours
• Promote EHSL research and education services to the greater health sciences community as part of the Education and Research Team
• Contribute innovative ideas and develop innovative programs and services as part of the EHSL Faculty Council
• Contribute to written reports and the library's social media offerings
• Contribute to professional knowledge base by preparing and delivering presentations and publications
• Perform other duties as assigned
