Position Category: Staff - Full-Time

Summary:
The Grounds department at Utah Valley University is seeking a Lead Mechanic to maintain, repair or fabricate all grounds equipment, including all motorized and non-motorized (licensed and unlicensed) equipment used for the physical plant operations, maintenance, construction and repair. The Lead Mechanic will keep accurate and detailed maintenance records and develop a library of mechanical and technical manuals. The Lead Mechanic will supervise the grounds shop and personnel within the shop and will evaluate and monitor the condition of all equipment by operating and testing for safety and proper functioning. The Lead Mechanic will train grounds personnel on how to start, operate and safely use all grounds equipment.

Required Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with an associates degree and two years of experience related to the summary of duties; OR any combination of education and experience related to the summary of duties totaling four years.

Must possess a current, valid drivers license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in repairing small and large engines and equipment. Knowledge of hydraulic repair. Knowledge of grounds maintenance and landscaping.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge. Possess interpersonal, problem-solving and decision making skills.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing. * Able to maintain accurate records and files. * Able to perform auto body repair and painting.
  • Able to operate heavy and light equipment. * Ability to work an on-call 24/7 schedule for snow removal and other campus emergencies.
  • Able to read and understand the electrical schematics of equipment.
  • Able to safely operate welders (wire, arc and gas).
  • Able to monitor a budget and report verbally and in writing the mechanical needs of the department. This includes the ability to analyze and compare the cost effectiveness of repair vs. replacement of physical plant equipment and be able to verbally and in writing make recommendations to appropriate physical plant personnel.

Physical Requirements:
-Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. -Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
-Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
-Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

Pay Range: $33,385 to $41,731
