Position Category: Staff - Part-Time (Variable Hour)

Summary:
Conducts ground and flight instruction, evaluates and records student performance and progress, and recommends students for FAA practical tests. Works under the direction of the Chief Flight Instructor and in accordance with FAA regulations, department policies and standard operating procedures. Maintains knowledge, proficiency and currency as required for duties and standardization requirements.

  • Flight center hours of operation are 6:30am through 8:00pm with extended hours on some days.
  • Student training slots are 3 days per week on Monday/Wednesday/Friday and Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday. Training slot duration is 2 hours each day.
  • Work schedule is assigned based on open training slots. Training slots are assigned to CFIs in preferential order based on a combined performance-, experience- and seniority-based system. Minimum number students is 3, maximum is 5-7. Instructor schedules are planned for maximum hours possible.
  • Part-time work limits are 123 hours per month based on federal limitations.
  • Work time outside student slots are required as necessary for mandatory meetings, record-keeping, lesson preparation, communication with students and supervisors.

    Required Qualifications:
    Graduated with a standard high school diploma or the equivalent and current FAA Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with Airplane Single-Engine Land, Instrument Airplane, and other ratings applicable to the responsibilities assigned.
    Current FAA Flight Instructor Certificate with Airplane Single-Engine and other ratings applicable to the responsibilities assigned.
    Current FAA Second-Class Medical Certificate.
    Current flight review and instrument privileges.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations, including FAR Part 141.
    • Knowledge of standard pilot training practices and all applicable information resources.
    • Knowledge required to demonstrate competence in the privileges of the pilot and instructor certificates held.
    • Must regularly demonstrate competence and skills in all operational duties including piloting, flight instruction, ground instruction and student evaluation.
    • Effective teaching skills.
    • Interpersonal, problem-solving, communication and organizational skills.
    • Ability to, and required to, pass initial and recurrent tests related to flight instructor duties and standardization requirements.
    • Ability to maintain proficiency and currency on required pilot and instructor privileges.
    • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively.
    • Ability to work with and address student conflicts or concerns.
    • Ability to work professionally and collaboratively with others.
    • Ability to receive feedback and accept correction.
    • Ability to use standard word processing and general computer applications.
    • Ability to work within the operating limitations of all aircraft in the UVU fleet including access to controls and emergency equipment.

    Physical ability to operate aircraft and equipment safely and effectively.

    Benefits Summary:
    You may be eligible for a 3 credit hour or 1 class tuition waiver after 6 consecutive months of employment and a minimum of 475 hours worked. Dependents do not qualify for a waiver.

    $250 bonus per student recommendation resulting in a 1st time checkride pass.

    $250 bonus per on-time student completion.

    $18/hr starting pay. Programmed pay increases through $26/hr with completed levels of course qualifications and experience.

    Zero cost CFII training for employed instructors able to complete 141 Instrument standardization.

    Pay Range: $18-$26 hr / DOQ, plus bonuses
