Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
The laboratory examines how opiate drugs influence the cellular and molecular pathogenesis of HIV infection in the brain. Thus, the lab pursues cross-disciplinary research in neuroscience, pharmacology, neuroimmunology, virology, and neuropathology. Research involves the use of animal and human cells in culture, infectious and non-infectious models of HIV , and the use of rodents, as well as human pathology samples. The job requires an ability to efficiently and carefully conduct procedures and operations related to experimental procedures within the lab.

Minimum Hiring Standards
Needed is a medical technologist (or equivalent) with experience working with mouse tissues, frozen/cryostat sectioning, and immunohistochemistry. Minimum educational qualifications include a BS in a related field or equivalent training and experience and previous employment in a related position. Specific techniques: The candidate is expected to have knowledge of (i) histological procedures and microscopy (widefield and confocal); (ii) biochemical assays, including the isolation, purification, and characterization of proteins (e.g., western blotting) and basic molecular biology (e.g., isolation and characterization of nucleic acids, PCR , quantitative PCR ), and (iii) cell culture. Must have excellent communications skills and a demonstrated ability to work professionally and efficiently with students, faculty and technical staff.

Preferred Hiring Standards
Significant experience in histology and immunochemistry is desirable. Some knowledge of neuroscience, neuropathology and immunology is also desirable.
