The School of Nursing

The UTHSCSA School of Nursing is at the forefront of nursing education and research. The school leads excellence in nursing leadership through its innovative teaching, quality research, compassionate care, faculty practice, and service to the South Texas community and the world.

As part of the only Tier 1 research university in South Texas and one of the major academic health science centers in the nation, the School of Nursing is the only school in the region to offer doctoral nursing degrees.

UTHSCSA is educating future health care providers, but more importantly serving as the “leadership pipeline” for nursing faculty, clinical leaders and specialists, nurse practitioners, and nurse scientists.

The School has 9 Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). Additionally, 59 percent of the full-time faculty are doctorally prepared with another 9 percent enrolled in doctoral programs.

With the increasing shortage of nurses in Texas and across the country, the School is committed to preparing nursing students for today’s complex health environment. The School of Nursing offers the traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) as well as alternative pathways to the BSN for Associate Degree RNs and students who have completed a baccalaureate degree in another field. Additionally, the UTHSCSA School of Nursing Graduate Nursing Program offers educational opportunities for students at the Master’s, Post-Master’s, and Doctoral levels.

The Nursing School has 600 undergraduate and 350 graduate students. UT Nursing Clinical Enterprise

In September 2009, the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio School of Nursing created the Office of Practice and Engagement (OPE). The practice and engagement mission integrates discovery, learning, diversity, delivery, and engagement.  In 2010, the OPE evolved to the UT Nursing Clinical Enterprise (UTNCE). The Enterprise provides a research and learning laboratory where evidence-based practice and education occur. The UTNCE creates an accessible, compassionate, high-quality, culturally proficient, and cost-effective health care delivery system for individuals, families, and communities.

Since 2009, the UTNCE has been developing, implementing, and evaluating a sustainable alternative to the expensive, inefficient U.S. health care delivery system. Health care delivery in the UTNCE nurse-led, nurse-managed clinic networks provides a systematic process for continuous quality improvement. The UTNCE includes the UTHSCSA  Student Health Center (SHC), the Employee Health and Wellness Clinic (EHWC), Healy-Murphy Alternative High School Wellness Clinic, AVANCE Community Partnership Clinic, AVANCE Fenley Wellness Clinic, and the San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic. Each provides patient- and family-centered primary and acute care, chronic disease management, behavioral health services for underserved populations, nutrition counseling, a wide range of health care initiatives, and access to research populations.
