- Dean of Graduate Studies and Associate Provost

The Dean of Graduate Studies has a primary leadership role at The University of Texas at Dallas with responsibility for overseeing the quality and effective functioning of graduate education.  The Dean works closely with the academic deans and associate deans for graduate programs of the schools, together with the faculty, and in cooperation with the Committee on Educational Policy and the Academic Senate, on academic policies and procedures.  The Dean is responsible for the Graduate Catalog.  The Dean is also responsible for approving the faculty committees for all candidates for doctoral degrees, for scheduling final oral doctoral exams, for approving master’s theses and doctoral dissertations, and for validating all candidates for master’s and doctoral graduation.  The Dean also shares responsibility for the general welfare of graduate students and, in particular, for the training, mentoring, and support of graduate teaching and research assistants.  The Dean works collaboratively with the graduate studies programs in the eight schools and with professional staff who champion graduate education to enhance the effectiveness of recruiting, retaining, and evaluating doctoral students.  In cooperation with the university Academic Program Review committee, the institutional liaison to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the schools’ deans, and the Provost, the Graduate Dean also is assigned the responsibility for conducting the periodic external reviews of graduate degree programs in accordance with university policy and the rules of The University of Texas System and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.  

 

Minimum Education and Experience

  • An earned doctorate from an accredited university is required.
  • Must currently hold appointment as a tenured faculty member at UT Dallas or be qualified for such a tenured appointment in one of UT Dallas’s eight teaching schools.
  • Must have a record of active participation in university service and of successful graduate teaching and research mentoring.

 

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Meaningful experience within academic administration at UT Dallas or in another doctoral granting university.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with academic deans and faculty in the development of faculty policy on graduate education.
  • Lead the development of university policy on graduate education through Graduate Council.
  • Lead the implementation of policy on graduate education within the faculty.
  • Contribute to the effective implementation of university policy in areas affecting graduate students.
  • Approve the appointment of internal and external examiners for graduate degrees.
  • Make academic decisions involving the process of examination for graduate degrees assessed mainly by dissertation.
  • Certify graduate students for graduation.
  • Contribute to the development of new programs of graduate study.
  • Manage the graduate catalog preparation and editing.
  • Advise on graduate admission procedures.
  • Approve incomplete graduates and leaves of absence.
  • Conduct annual training program for new teaching assistant appointees.
  • Help graduate students access appropriate funding opportunities.
  • Monitor graduate student progress.
  • Deal with casework on issues involving graduate student progress, appeals, individual and group complaints, and representations from groups of students about programs and units.
  • Approve extensions and suspensions of study.
  • Advise staff with graduate student advisory roles within the faculty.
  • Oversee the updating of information provided by the faculty to current and prospective graduate students.
  • Liaise with faculty quality assurance teams and support implementation of their recommendations relating to graduate education.

 

Additional Information

  • The Graduate Dean reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and is a member of the Deans’ Caucus and a member of the Provost’s Cabinet with additional assistant, associate, and vice provosts.
  • The Graduate Dean supervises the staff in the Office of Graduate Studies and works with the Graduate Council, a standing faculty governance committee comprised of representatives from each of the eight schools
  • The position of Dean of Graduate Studies is a full-time, twelve-month administrative appointment.  As such, classroom teaching is not required during service as Dean, although not actively discouraged if limited to a level that is consistent with the demands of the office.
