Structural Maintenance Tech

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary: The Structural Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining buildings and equipment by diagnosing and repairing problems.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintains buildings by completing preventive maintenance schedules; following policies and procedures; reporting needed changes.
  • Ensures operation of structure and systems by replacing and repairing structural elements, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Complies with federal, state and local building codes by adhering to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
  • Ensures operation of tools and equipment used in the job by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Maintains continuity between work teams by documenting maintenance actions; noting system or equipment irregularities requiring continued monitoring.
  • Maintains safe and clean work environment by complying with regulations, rules, and procedures.
  • Maintains parts and equipment by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed parts and equipment; placing and expediting orders for parts and equipment; verifying receipt of parts and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:
Required Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 2 years of general maintenance experience.

Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.
  • Must be insurable under the university motor vehicle requirements.
  • Satisfactory results from a post-offer physical examination.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic hand tools and testing equipment.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques.
  • Ability to verbally communicate technical information.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):
  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for using common hand tools required for the trade as well as using specialty tools such as drills, nail guns, portable sanders, and metal cutting tools. Carpenters are also require to operate commercial shop tools safely. This position will require bending, crouching, walking, kneeling, climbing ladders and stairs, and prolonged standing.
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 40 lbs.

Work Environment:
  • Work is indoors/outdoors and not sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
  • May be exposed to harmful fumes, mold, lubricants, and asbestos.
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
