Sports Turf Manager

Job Title: Sports Turf Manager Job Number: 2017-234 Department: Grounds Maintenance - 23330 Job Description:
FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Summary: The Sports Turf Manager is responsible for planning, supervising and executing the maintenance of athletic fields. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director for Grounds, and works closely with the Athletic Department and support staff.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

Oversees turf management practices and techniques for football, baseball, soccer, volleyball and intramural fields.

Manages grounds personnel tasked with mowing, painting, striping, irrigation, fertilizing and other field maintenance operations during week and on game days.

Performances field maintenance actions outside of normal work hours to support game activities including but not limited to baseball, football, soccer, and volleyball.

Preps baseball fields before and after practice, pre and post-game venue preparation, baseball mound preparation and repair; infield dragging, raking, blowing before each game, touch-ups during game, line chalking, roll baselines; clean, paint, and install bases; tarp management.

Oversees all of football and soccer field turf operations for stadium and practice fields and supports game-day operation for home games.

Oversees beach volleyball court maintenance and preparations for practice and tournaments.

Orders necessary supplies including sod, red clay, sand, and paint required for proper field maintenance.

Develops and implements an off-season maintenance program for all athletic fields, including but not limited to, mowing, fertilizing and chemical application schedules.

Remains current in knowledge and familiarity of all NCAA, conference and university rules and regulations related sports turf management.

Communicates regularly with staff and other members of the management team to discuss activities, goals, plans and user input.

Attends related meetings, trade shows, conferences, etc.

Assists in development of proposals for improvement of all athletic fields.

Complies with federal, state and local building codes by adhering to requirements; advising management on needed actions.

Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.

Ensures operation of tools and equipment used in the job by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.

Maintains continuity among work teams by documenting and communication actions, irregularities and continuing needs.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Turf Management, Horticulture or directly related field.
  • 5 plus years of experience in sports field management.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • 2 plus years of direct experience with fields in a competitive performance team environment.


Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
  • Valid Texas driver's license;
  • Current TDA Pesticide Applicator's License or must be able to obtain within 90 days after employment.


Preferred Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
  • Certification in Sports Field Management or Sports Turf Grass Management


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic record keeping techniques.
  • Knowledge of athletic fields (natural grass and synthetic surfaces).
  • Knowledge of field setups for baseball, football, soccer, beach, volleyball and track and field.
  • Knowledge of the operation of field maintenance equipment, including but not limited to various types of mowers, drag mats, line striping machines, etc.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge of parking lots and special game day parking areas.
  • Skill in some or all components of Microsoft Office.
  • Skill in Microsoft Windows navigation.
  • Skill to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and sketches.
  • Ability to communicate with users of the field (coaches, players, parents, spectators) if necessary
  • Ability to communicate regularly with other members of the top management team to discuss activities, goals, plans and user input.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to draft grammatically correct correspondence.
  • Ability to verbally communicate technical information.


Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):
  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
  • Lifting , carrying and moving objects and equipment up to 50 lbs.


Work Environment:
  • Work is indoor/outdoor during all seasons and elements and not sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
  • There are moderate environmental conditions present for this job (exposure to pesticides and fertilizers).
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
