Job Summary: The Librarian II is responsible for developing, preserving, and promoting rare book collections at TCU to faculty, students and staff along with the general public.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

Supports use of TCU rare book collections by working directly with researchers; answers inquiries by phone, mail, and email. Partners with reference liaisons to identity opportunities to promote these collections in support of the curriculum; conducts classes using primary materials. Seeks opportunities to collaborate with teaching faculty to integrate rare book material in coursework. Demonstrates interpersonal skills and strong customer service approach.

Provides outreach for the department to the university community and the public at large; makes presentations about the department and its collections to faculty, staff, students and the public; creates descriptive information about the collections for web pages and web exhibits; assists with departmental exhibits showcasing rare books; works with the Friends of the TCU Library. Builds the department's rare book collections by selecting and purchasing material in multiple formats (manuscripts, maps, books, etc.) and maintaining institutional collection development policies that support TCU's curriculum.

Evaluates and accept gifts appropriate to TCU; works with University Advancement in maintaining and creating donor records and participates in recognition events. Preserves the department's collections by applying collection-level measures to materials; makes conservation/preservation decisions for individual items. Supervises one or two non-exempt library employees and some TCU students.

Participates in library-wide digital humanities projects with a particular focus on expanding access to rare book materials; considers new methods of delivering services within a changing technological environment; becomes familiar with emerging technologies relevant to Special Collections. Assist library marketing activities to promote collections to the campus community with activities such as event planning and book talks.

Contributes to the overall operation of the library by participating on committees; communicates and coordinates planning with the Dean and with other library departments; develops reports, attends meetings; maintains skills with professional development type activities; works effectively with colleagues in a team-based environment and assists the Dean with building security for rare book material. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Required Education and Experience:

• Masters in Library Science/Information Science (ALA Accredited)

• 3 years library experience including 1 year in a supervisory capacity; experience with rare book collections

Preferred Education and Experience:

• Second master's degree in History or Literature, working knowledge of a second language, knowledge of the history of books and manuscripts, familiarity with book repair and conservation techniques; familiarity with copyright and privacy laws, knowledge of digital humanities

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge of computer applications as they relate to library special collections.

• Skill in all aspects of library special collections operations, including acquisition, arrangement, preservation, access, and reference.

• Skill in oral and written communication.

• Ability to train and lead staff

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

• Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.

• Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.

• Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.

• Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.

• Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.

Work Environment:

• Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.

• There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.

• The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
