Director of Financial Operations

Job Title: Director of Financial Operations Job Number: 2017-063 Department: Financial Services Office - 22200 Job Description:
Job Summary: The Director of Financial Operations is responsible for managing the financial operations of the Accounts Payable and Research Grant Accounting functions; ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations and university financial policies; establishing and monitoring financial internal controls; supporting external and internal audits; providing leadership for computer system and software implementations; implementing projects to increase Accounts Payable efficiencies and reduce processing costs.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

Manages Accounts Payable and Research Grant Accounting functions. Supervises, trains, and evaluates the Assistant Director of Financial Operations and Accounts Payable Financial Assistants. Implements and monitors compliance with federal and state regulations and university financial policies. Establishes and monitors financial internal controls.

Supports external and internal audits and implements applicable audit recommendations. Reviews results of third-party data scans of vendor files and disbursements and implements related internal control improvements. Analyzes vendor payments for compliance with university policies. Oversees the processing of vendor payments and reviews and approves disbursements. Oversees analysis of vendor payments for compliance with university contract requirements and payment terms. Prepares IRS and other tax forms related to vendor payments.

Develops and prepares ad hoc financial reports and queries. Provides leadership for computer system upgrades, testing, and implementations related to Accounts Payable. Identifies and implements new Accounts Payable projects to increase efficiencies and reduce costs related to payment processing. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelors' degree in Accounting or related field of study.

• 5 plus years Accounting/Auditing experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

• Public accounting audit experience.

• Higher education experience.

• PeopleSoft system experience.

• Research grant experience.

Preferred Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:

• CPA license.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.

• Skill in both written and oral communication.

• Skill in the use of Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel and Outlook.

• Ability to independently extract, research, and analyze financial data and develop recommendations.

• Ability to effectively manage multiple broad projects.

• Ability to review detailed financial transactions for accuracy and appropriateness.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

• Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.

• Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.

• Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.

• Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.

• Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.

Work Environment:

• Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.

• There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.

• The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
