Assistant Director Athletics Academic Services

Job Description:

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary: Commensurate with experience and education

Job Summary: The Assistant Director - Athletics Academic Services is responsible for supporting department programs by providing individual or group student advising on academic, career-related issues, programs and curriculum; assisting student in obtaining desired academic outcome.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

Provides academic advising services to Student Athlete Support Services by meeting with student-athletes in Basketball and/or other assigned sports to appraise their individual academic strengths and weaknesses and to discuss academic, career and personal concerns; responsible for the organization of study hall for all Basketball student athletes. Creates daily study hall reports and weekly progress reports for the Basketball coaching staff; lead person for meeting with Head Basketball coach, assistant coaches and support staff monthly and as required by the head basketball coach.

Develops and implements programs by working with the Director of Academic Support Services to design and implement a wide range of instructional activities, materials, programs, services, and strategies for use with individuals, small groups, and/or department wide. Identifies issues with policies and regulations, and recommends changes; interprets academic regulations and serves as a resource for students, faculty, parents and athletics staff.

Coordinates the administrative processes involved in supporting academic programs which typically include recruitment, selection, registration, orientation, and progression of students specialized orientation programming for freshman/transfer student-athletes. Provides oversight of evening / night time employees, including temporary staff, student staff, study hall monitors, etc.

Maintains a viable working relationship with athletic administrators, coaches faculty, university support staff, and parents by contacting and interacting frequently with academic advisors and student service departments to access the academic progress/status of the student athletes. Communicates frequently with coaching staff, AAS director, apprising them of academic progress by maintaining individual performance records and preparing periodic reports.

Participates in continued education and training by personal professional development including active participation in NCAA sponsored seminars, conference meetings and applicable conventions and Athletic Academic Compliance. Provides academic advising to assigned pre-major student-athletes. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Required Education and Experience:
  • Master's Degree
  • 3 years' experience advising/counseling students in higher education or related field.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Knowledge of NCAA eligibility rules


Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
  • Valid Texas Driver's License
  • Insurable under the University Motor Vehicle requirements.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of appropriate computer software packages
  • Skill in both spoken and written communication.
  • Skill in making updates to digital and social media channels daily.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision under strict deadlines in a fact paced environment.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours.

  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
