Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies

The University of South Carolina welcomes applications for the position of Vice Provost (or Senior Vice Provost, depending on the candidate’s qualification) and Dean of Undergraduate Studies.  Faculty members who are tenured or eligible for tenure at the rank of associate or full professor in any discipline are invited to apply.  The position reports to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost (Provost), and serves at the pleasure of the Provost.  The position is expected to begin in June 2016 and will be a one-year appointment with subsequent renewals upon mutual agreement.  

The successful candidate should:
•    Be a teacher and scholar of proven excellence with a record of academic accomplishment appropriate for appointment at the rank of tenured associate or full professor with a Ph.D. or other terminal degree in the discipline.
•    Demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence and innovation in undergraduate education, with the ability to inspire and lead faculty, staff, and students, at a large public research university that values highly the quality of the undergraduate student experience.
•    Demonstrate a successful record of experience with integrated learning programs that leverage for the benefit of students many beyond-the-classroom experiences such as undergraduate research, global study, service learning, internships, living/learning communities, and other student engagements.
•    Demonstrate a successful record of experience collaborating with student affairs and academic support units.
•    Possess interest in enhancing the undergraduate curriculum through active learning, online and hybrid courses, and experiential learning opportunities.
•    Demonstrate a successful record of experience with curriculum development and approval processes; experience with accreditation review preferred.
•    Demonstrate strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.
•    Possess three or more years of administrative experience and leading positive change at the department, college or university level.

Essential functions of the position include:
•    Oversight of the University of South Carolina undergraduate academic experience including
o    The Carolina Core, the university’s general education program
o    The new University Advising Center and newly launched advising initiative
o    USC Connect, the university’s award-winning integrated learning initiative
o    Graduation with Leadership Distinction, USC’s signature leadership development program
o    Living-learning residential program faculty principals
o    Chair of the Undergraduate Studies Council
o    Fellowships and Scholar Programs
o    First-Year Reading Experience
•    Direction of Summer, Evening, and Non-Degree Programs (USC’s On Your Time initiative)
•    Office of Institutional Research and Assessment
•    SACSCOC and CHE Accreditation and Compliance
•    Center for Teaching Excellence

THE UNIVERSITY: The University of South Carolina's main campus is located in the downtown area of Columbia, which is the state capital. The Columbia campus currently enrolls approximately 24,200 undergraduates and 7,800 graduate students. The University of South Carolina system has three additional regional comprehensive campuses, and four two-year campuses.
