Research Assistant Professor of Orthodontics

The Research Assistant Professor ( RAP ) will report to the Principal Investigator (Hyun Koo) in the Biofilm Research Laboratories at the Department of Orthodontics, School of Dental Medicine. Duties will include supervision of the lab including the supervision of other lab members, acting as lab safety officer and preparing IACUC protocols, designing and managing projects in the lab including supervising experiments carried out by lab members. Duties also include participation in the writing of grants and manuscripts from the lab. The RAP will oversee the laboratory, including laboratory supplies, routine maintenance of instruments and equipment used for research. The RAP will be responsible for conducting biofilm research using biophysical, microbiological, molecular and/or confocal microscopy methods as well as in vivo (rodent) models.
Candidate must have PhD with at least five years of post-doctoral training degree with emphasis on Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Molecular Biology and/or Microbiology. Extensive laboratory experience and strong publication record in the area of bioengineering, bacteria-surface interactions, molecular biology and/or biofilm research are preferred. Successful candidates should have extensive hands-on experience with advanced microscopy and imaging techniques, biophysical analyses and bioengineering methods (e.g. AFM , surface chemistry, shear-force analysis and nanoparticle synthesis). Animal handling experience will be viewed positively. The position requires the ability to lead projects and work collaboratively across the Penn campus, carry out and troubleshoot experiments, and assist in grant and manuscript writing. It is expected that the successful applicant will apply for extramural funding.
