Assistant Professor, Clinician-Educator Track

The Department of Pathobiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine seeks applications for a clinician-educator assistant professor in the area of microbial genomics and bioinformatics.
Duties
The individual will take a leading role in directing the Center for Host Microbial Interactions ( CHMI ). The main goal of the CHMI is to empower and facilitate cutting-edge genomics research broadly across the School of Veterinary Medicine and expand our capabilities in the area of host-microbe interactions with an emphasis on integrating diverse, complex datasets. The candidate's duties will be divided between Center-related activities and an independent research program. A successful candidate will be able to: 1) establish pipelines for computation analysis involving next-generation sequencing, such as transcriptome profiling by RNAseq, ChIPseq, pathogen genomics using DNAseq, and analysis of complex microbial community structure by marker gene sequencing and shot-gun metagenomics; 2) develop a didactic curriculum to educate graduate students and postdoctoral trainees in approaches to analyze biomedical 'big data' sets, as well as develop short courses on this topic for faculty; 3) work with clinical and research faculty to tailor data analysis pipelines to address specific biological questions; 4) coordinate outreach activities that would include an annual pilot grant funding program and an annual, cross-school symposium on host-microbe interactions. Additional teaching responsibilities will include periodic lectures on host-microbe interactions in graduate or veterinary courses. Importantly, the candidate must have a strong understanding of biology to complement their computational expertise. A successful candidate will also develop an independent research program in an area that complements the goals and activities of the center, and synergizes with the research programs of other faculty in the School.
Qualifications
Competitive applicants should have a Ph.D. in microbiology, immunology, or molecular biology, and 3-5 years of postdoctoral training in a biomedical institution. The candidate must demonstrate a strong publication record and the ability to secure extramural funding. The position will entail significant one-on-one interactions with other faculty and trainees, and therefore besides exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to comprehend pathogenic mechanisms is required. In addition, the candidate must also be proficient in statistics, programming languages (Perl, Ruby, Python, or R/Bioconductor), and have experience applying these tools in the analysis of datasets originating from either host or microbial sources. Expertise in integrating diverse datasets (i.e. microbiome data with metabolomics) or mining data rich in clinical metadata is strongly preferred.
The University of Pennsylvania is an outstanding environment for research, and collaborative research opportunities abound within the School of Veterinary Medicine and the wider Penn biomedical research community.
The search committee will begin considering applications immediately. Candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, and contact information for three references through the University of Pennsylvania's online application system by February 15th.
