Department of Politics and International Relations

The Department of Politics and International Relations at Messiah College invites applications for a term-tenure track position in International Relations and Comparative Politics.

Responsibilities: Applicants must be able to teach introductory courses in both International Politics and Comparative Politics as well as an upper-level survey of theoretical approaches to international relations. With respect to Comparative Politics, we are seeking someone who specializes in Asian Politics, Middle Eastern Politics, and/or African Politics. Successful candidates will show an interest in and commitment to teaching general education students in our interdisciplinary studies program. Departmental administrative experience is a plus.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Political Science, International Relations, or related field. We seek faculty committed to undergraduate teaching and research in the context of a Christian liberal arts college.

The Program: The Department of Politics and International Relations offers courses in American government, history of political thought, international politics and comparative politics, giving students a solid foundation in the main sub-fields of Political Science. As students advance through the major, they expand their knowledge of politics and international relations by diving deeper into political history, institutions, policy, law, ethics, research, and global affairs. All students take a similar sequence of core courses; then, they have the opportunity to declare a concentration in either political studies or international relations.

The Department: We are a department of approximately fifty majors whose graduates have included Rhodes, Truman, Carnegie, and Fulbright scholars. Our students are encouraged to think independently, to engage opposing points of view, and to develop a concern for public life in the interest of promoting social justice.

The College: Messiah College is a Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences and has a student body of approximately 2,800 undergraduate students including 13.9% of under-represented and 5.0% international students from 32 countries and over 600 graduate students including 11.8% of students from under-represented populations.

Our mission is to educate men and women toward maturity of intellect, character and Christian faith in preparation for lives of service, leadership and reconciliation in church and society. Messiah College is a teaching institution that emphasizes instruction but values research and public service. Strong support is given to faculty development in teaching and scholarship.

Diversity: The College seeks to create a work environment and organizational culture that reflects and appreciates the uniqueness that the individual brings to the workplace while striving to provide an atmosphere of success. Messiah’s strategic plan includes a commitment to community engagement in diverse settings and the development of cross-cultural competencies as well as a commitment to developing a comprehensive and integrated approach to global engagement. As such, Messiah College is fully committed to a culturally diverse faculty and student body. Successful candidates will evidence similar commitments.
