Instructional Advisor - TRiO

Responsibilities

The Instructional advisor will provide comprehensive developmental academic advising to a caseload of TRiO students to develop individual success plans. Provide individual guidance, instruction  and academic advising to at-risk students one-on-one regarding personal issues, social adjustment, academics, financial aid, and career options; monitor students’ progress and make, provide and/or recommend appropriate intervention measures. Make appropriate campus and community referrals as needed.  Prepare, coordinate, and assist with personal growth workshops and presentations for students and staff that will promote student persistence. Assist with coordinating and training for tutoring program.  Attend staff development and workshops/conferences.  Assist with data collection and project reporting requirements, TRiO and departmental assessment plan.  Team or individually teach a section of First Year Seminar with other TRiO faculty.    Participate in other university and project responsibilities as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Minimum requirements: An earned Master’s Degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Student Affairs or a closely related field; professional experience in at-risk student advising; experience working with college level developmental students; and completion of a successful campus interview which will include a demonstration of relevant knowledge and skills including individual counseling and/or advising. Additional qualifications: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written); demonstration, through past accomplishments and behaviors, of the ability to support Mansfield University’s principles and values of Character, Scholarship, Culture, Service (http://www1.mansfield.edu/mansfield-creed) and the University’s strong student-centered vision and mission. Preferred: Reading Certification and direct experience working with a TRiO program and a demonstrated knowledge of university support services.  Other conditions of employment are verification of all earned degrees through the receipt of original transcripts, an acceptable background check report, authorization to be employed in the United States or the ability to obtain prior to commencement of employment, and positive references.

 

Essential Functions

Provide effective personal counseling to students; provide advising to students; and communicate and write effectively.  Effective use of computer skills including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with students, fellow staff and other campus personnel; and ability to gather and analyze data for project reporting.  Support continued scholarly growth and service to the department, university and community. Travel is required.  May be required to lift, stand, walk, reach with arms, etc.

 

Status

Temporary, part-time (50%) position for the 2015 Spring Semester.  This position is grant funded by the Federal TRiO Student Support Services Program.  This position will be funded on an annual basis contingent upon grant funding and performance.
