Director of Public Safety and University Police

Position: Under the direction of the Vice President for Administration and Finance, the Director of Public Safety and University Police plans, organizes, directs and administers all police and public safety functions. He/she is responsible for the administration, operation, strategic planning and financial oversight of a comprehensive full-service police agency and policing program, comprised of thirty-three (33) employees.  The director interacts with a variety of university constituents as well as local, regional, state and Federal public safety agencies to development and implement comprehensive services and programs for the safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors.  He/she represents the department in the local community and serves as a central role in forging partnerships and engaging stakeholders in strategies and programs that add value to the collegiate experience and contribute to providing a safe and secure campus environment.

Areas of responsibility also include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing effective University safety policies and programs and appropriate crime prevention strategies for the University
  • Overseeing officer and staff recruitment, staffing, training, promotions and retention efforts and assuring compliance with all professional standards/requirements for police officers
  • Providing accurate and timely reporting as related to local, state, and federal regulations
  • Supervising the sworn and non-sworn police and public safety officers

Required qualifications and experience:

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public or business administration, social science or a related field and seven to ten years of demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience in law enforcement in a higher education setting.  A current certification as a law enforcement officer by his/her respective state with no more than one year break in sworn service at the time of appointment is also required. Preference will be given to candidates with a Master’s degree and executive law enforcement training.

The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated commitment to community policing with an understanding of student development and the needs of a complex, diverse campus community; demonstrated experience with emergency preparedness, managing large events and facilitating organizational change; knowledge of organizational development and management as well as best practices in higher education law enforcement policies, practices and techniques for safety and security; understanding of progressive law enforcement technology and computerization; skill in planning, staffing, organizing, directing and evaluating a police department.

A demonstrated record of leadership, strategic thinking, and collaboration, as well as superior oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are essential for success in the Director role. Candidates must communicate effectively and perform well in the interview(s).
