Major Gifts Officer - 3 Positions Available

The Major Gift Officer is responsible for cultivating meaningful relationships with potential and current Leadership Gift level donors to Lehigh University. The Gift Officer will manage a portfolio of donors and prospective donors, and be responsible for facilitating all phases of the gift cycle, including initiating contact, cultivating and moving potential donors to solicitation and closure, making solicitations, writing proposals, and stewarding donors. The Gift Officer works collaboratively with key volunteers, University leadership, Development and Alumni Relations staff, and other University representatives to cultivate and solicit donors for University priorities. Major Gift Officers are assigned to a region, a project area, or to a constituent group.





  1. Develop relationships for the university with donors and prospective donors to secure financial support for university priorities

    • Qualify donor prospects; assess capacity, project interests, and inclination

    • Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of assigned prospects to secure financial support for university priorities

    • Arrange or staff campus visits, tours, cultivation events, and meetings for managed prospects or for a project or region

    • Prepare both customized and standardized proposals, correspondence, and reports for prospective donors and donors



  2. Plans, coordinates, and administers a comprehensive development program for a geographical region or constituent or project group

    • Develop annual fundraising plans, identify potential donors, and assess feasibility on projects

    • Serve as project manager to track fundraising progress, monitor pipeline, and new prospect activity

    • Assist in recruitment and management of key fundraising volunteers

    • Assist in development of case statements, proposal templates, cultivation events, and reports related to assigned area

    • Serve as Development and Alumni Relations representative at key meetings and as liaison for the Development and Alumni Relations Team; provide reports on region or project area at meetings

    • Work with key leadership in the development of fundraising projects that align with University priorities



  3. Reporting, records and accounting

    • Document activity with donors in timely manner

    • Ensure that gifts are booked properly and in accordance with accounting standards and university policies; troubleshoot when discrepancies discovered

    • Provide reports on projects and performance

    • Manage or work with University Events on cultivation events

    • Oversee stewardship for assigned prospects and constituent area




  • This position is responsible for driving university-owned vehicles as a routine function, therefore a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License and a good driving record is required

  • Periods of high volume/workload or overtime will be required

  • Occasional evening, holiday or weekend hours

  • Extensive travel as dictated by location of major prospective donors





  1. Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  2. Three to five years related work experience

  3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  4. Excellent writing ability and organizational skills

  5. Solid analytical, decision making and problem solving skills

  6. Solid presentation skills

  7. Solid computer skills with experience using word processing and spreadsheet software

  8. Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, national criminal background checks, motor vehicle checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance and credit history based upon the requirements of the position
